I am getting an error code of 90 when turning the ignition on. After starting the cruise control will not work , light on display only flashes. If I restart and the code is gone the cruise will work. Is this usually the front or rear brake light switch? Any suggestions? thank you

Are you sure it read 90?

If you have a pre 2017, perhaps you could check by selecting Diag mode - post 17 & you will need a dealer or a decent OBD2 reader.

However, if you meant Code 19, this would indicate a faulty side-stand switch, which can sometimes be the clutch switch - both affect setting CC.

Had the same happen on my 2014 a few times. Fortunately the issue resolved itself each time. I can't say what prompted it. Once it was after a major downpour, the second time after I had done some service, including flushing the brakes. I don't use the CC much, but fortunately it worked the one time I really needed it (Saddle Sore and Bun Burner combo) and that was only weeks after the issue happened the first time.
From everything I have been reading here, tearing down all the switches isn't a guaranteed solution either, so I rather save the money and hassle.

Hi,
I have been experiencing the Flashing CC light recently.
I think I have found the problem, I hope!
Troubleshooting:
Key ON ( no need to start)
CC switch Press
Amber CC light should illuminate steady.
Repeatedly actuate Front Brake Lever, ( for me, after about 20 blips, the CC amber light started flashing).
Repeat same procedure for Clutch and Rear Brake.
In my case I was "only" able to get the CC amber light to start flashing via the Front Brake Lever.
Hum.... guess I will order a new front brake switch, as it appears non- repairable.
I hope this helps you.
Cheers, from Vancouver Island BC

For me it was the front brake switch assembly. No more problems since I changed it for a new one (€153) two weeks a go. Hope it helps you.

Hello Again.... I just removed the switch assembly from the brake lever assembly, and found upon close inspection, that the switch halves do not close 100%, the little plastic tangs are not a great fit. I opened the switch, cleaned and lubed with a little silicone spray and then closed it up . I additionally tightly secured the switch halves with whipping thread (marine stuff), and teassembled. Now following my previous procedure the amber light does not flash. Bottom Line.... a cheap crappy switch... shame on Yamaha!

I have had the same issue a couple of times each year since I got my bike back in 2015.
Every time I've fixed the problem by sprayed the front brake switch with a bit of oil.

Hi Don, Thanks for your suggestion. After opening the switch, and finding a bunch of plastic parts, I can see where lube is helpful, keeping the bits moving as intended.
Cheers!

Well, It happened to my 2014 ES yesterday & wouldn't you know 2 months after YES warranty expired ! So I started trying to figure out what was causing it here's what's going on, turn key on CC light normal pull in f-brake lever a bunch of times nothing changes press rear brake a few times then after about 5-6 times the CC light starts blinking & error code 90 shows up on dash. I searched for error code 90 & this thread came up.
I've heard of the rear brake switch adjustment being a problem (that's not my problem as I've got it adjusted so the pedal goes about 1/2 way before light comes on) & Front brake or clutch switch being a problem and replacing those switches fixed problem. Has anyone had a rear brake switch failure cause the CC problem or is that circuit linked somehow and the real problem is the F-brake switch ?
Thanks
LJM

Hello again: further to my previous posts on this issue.... I have gone over the front brake / cruise wiring, end to end, and it appears as others have mentioned... it requires a new switch assembly. Lucky me, not currently available in Canada (C$190.00) most US suppliers won't ship to Canada due Covid, and the duty and taxes plus our weak dollar.... man what a mess. I am stuck for now... Thank you YAMAHA, you make my day!

With my bike it was the front brake switches like mentioned above. Have had no problems anymore.

Ok, I just ordered the switch, did you replace switch yourself if so can you tell me where it plugs into ? I'm thinking tank has to come off to find the other end and install it.
Thanks

Hi,
Changing the switch requires removing both upper side panels, tipping the tank up, releasing a bunch of ty wraps, clamps and pulling the main wiring bundle away from the area enough to get to a black plastic moisture shield. There are 4 plugs inside the shield, one of which is the one you want. This is not difficult, but rather fiddling and time consuming. The plugs are sometimes sticky to separate. I hope this helps. Post again if you need more details...... Have Fun!

It is a pretty simple job, but as mentioned by @MurrayC Fiddling and time consuming. It took me an hour. Removed upper and lower panels on right side. Loosened bunch of reusable cable-ties. The plug is roughly located above the battery a bit to the right, in a group with in a sort of cover. No tank removing or loosening required for me.
You can do it, good luck!

Hi Guys, further to the flashing CC light & switch replacement...
Yamaha Customer Service in Canada told me the original -00-00 front brake switch is being phased out, replaced by a -01-00 part number. The original switches are disappearing, and the superseding and hopefully better engineered part is currently coming up as a backorder. This is somewhat annoying, but there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck if you are trying to acquire a replacement part. Cheers from Vancouver Island!
