Ultra NooB question. I bought a used 2012 S10 a few weeks ago with less than 1000 miles on it. I love the bike, but am not sure if the engine noise is normal. I've never heard another S10 so I could be over cautious. What is it supposed to sound like?

Imagine tipping a tool box full of spanners down a metal staircase, that's about it ! They are not the quietest of engines by a long stretch. When I heard mine for the first time I thought they had started up some old 100,000 mile wreck in the workshop, but no it was my fresh new S10. Embrace the clatter.

That about sums it up, mind you a 2012 model might be suffering CCT noise ::26::

Thank God they're pretty reliable. There's no way to isolate a problematic engine noise from a normal one, with this box of marbles engine engine. LOL

My diesel sounds more harmonious.

Having said that, since it is a 2012, I WOULD pay close attention to how it sounds for the first 10 seconds of a cold start.
As long as any "clatter" it makes in the first couple of seconds immediately subsides and settles into JUST the agricultural sound of this motor, I'd worry no more.
But if you Do have that nasty clatter, and it IS nasty sounding, and it lasts for more than just a very very few seconds, get that addressed.

If it were not for that one rare but SERIOUS issue, we would still be claiming the Super Tenere as indestructible.
But alas, there is one Achilles Heal in this amazing machine.

Thanks guys. I just wasn't sure what to make if it. Metal spanners bouncing down a metal staircase. I love that. I will embrace the sound and look for unusual sounds lasting for more than a few seconds after starting.

Good one! Mind, they are pretty quiet compared to our Stelvios, aren't they? :D

Cheers,

Bruce

You're not wrong Bruce ! My Stelvio always sounded like it was about to 'let go' at any second. It was still making the same clattery, knocking sounds 11,500 miles later. And mine was a relatively quiet one ???

Thanks 2112. I just brought my new to me 2012 home today and immediately started worrying. It's what I do....
You have helped me. I'll just ride and try not to worry. After all, it's why I ride Jap bikes, they are reliable.

Mine sounds like two skeletons screwing in a trash can

My 2012 with 11,000 miles on the clock use to sound exactly like that. This past week I installed the 2014 clutch basket and now it sounds like this (and I'm not exactly sure its a good thing) :

If its the light gear whine noise in your video your noticing, my 12 with the 14 clutch basket makes a similar sound. Not quite as loud as yours but I did notice it upon start up after the installation. It seems to be most noticeable in the lower gears between 2000-2500 or so RPM, then gone by around 3000. My guess is its the new driven gear on the 14 clutch basket mated with the original drive gear on the crankshaft. Its been about 15,000 km since it was installed and the sound seems to have lessened a bit, or I've just become used to it.
With the 14 clutch basket and CCT there is a little less two skeletons screwing in a trash can sound now, so that's a plus. ::008::
