Weeeell, I don't know about that. Both "flashes" make the bike more enjoyable. And, I'm pretty sure that I am getting the benefit of 100% power at all rpms; at least with my '17.

Not really. A flash can remove the big rev restrictions your '17 has in gears 1-3, adjust engine braking to your liking, change radiator fan engagement set point and more. It can be a custom tune to your specific liking. A flash is not only for smoothing the fueling as many state. I would not have flashed mine for that reason only.

In first gear....from a stop....I drop the clutch, and hammer the throttle....she takes off like a scalded ass ape. She almost keeps up with an FJR carrying a 130lb lighter rider. The ECU has not been flashed. It was my, apparently poor, attempt at humor referring to my wrist as being flashed. I have heard about the restrictions in the lower gears. My bike has never displayed such restrictions. It does have a sensitive throttle, and tons of engine braking. I absolutely love the way my bike runs & handles. Somewhere in this forum somebody said "to each their own". I totally agree.

The restrictions mentioned are not RPM restrictions, rather the rate at which the throttle bodies open and how far they open at different throttle positions in gears 1,2,3. Just as, both the T and S modes have the same HP and RPM, they have different rates of TB opening. Having said that I had my 2012 flashed and it was a big improvement over stock. With my Gen 2 2014 model I haven't as the bit of increase in HP and ECU tuning from the factory are better than my stock 12 was, so I have not taken the time and $ to have it flashed. As for engine braking, most that have theirs flashed have had a reduction in engine braking, which they like. I like the stock engine braking and use it as part of my riding technique, so don't have a desire to change that. Perhaps if I rode a Gen 2 that was flashed, I would change my mind, but I haven't ridden one.

And not just trottle positions...
I believe that if you give WOT, the trottle bodies will open much slower in "T" mode, than in "S" mode.

And that just might be the key to everything. Pre '14s being compared to post '14s. I also suspect that Yamaha has continued to alter/improve throttle response(s) as time goes on.

I believe I said that in my post above. :)
Yes, you kind of did :)
But after reading it, I was in doubt if everybody would read that the same thing is happening with WOT.
And not only the position the bodies opens to, but also how FAST they get there.
And if I was in doubt, then also some other people....or maybe not....might be my brain;)
Sorry:oops:

It’s my understanding that only the pre-14 Gen 1 bikes were restricted in the gears 1-3 and that the 2014 and onwards Gen 2 bikes here not restricted which is why flashing the ECU is more beneficial on Gen1 bikes.
