Do you like or ride with the flip up modular helmet? There are a few brands that have them.. I have an Arai normal full face now. I think I would enjoy the ability to flip the front up to talk with people, Etc........ What brand you have, do you like it???? Your thoughts?

I have a coupla a Shoei hats. Love them....the screen is sooo easy to change out. And the fit is good.
One.of them is a flip style...modular. its 10 years old.
I do have a full.face Arai too...love the interior of.this hat, but I've broken the little tab that holds the screen on
TWICE while on very very long trips. I wasn't happy. Love the luxurious interior.of the Arai, but that screen..
!!!!!

I'm a Shoei guy, they make quality stuff and the modular, even with its age is top drawer.
Go an pick your size and find one on the bay or "searchtempest.com"...
Works for me.

I’ve only had one modular…an HJC. It was too noisy (wind noise) and I only kept it for about a year. There are probably better modulars and certainly they’ve improved since, but I don’t think I’ll ever buy another. On a positive note, it caused me to start wearing earplugs. Today I’m actually uncomfortable without my Hearos. My current lid also has a chin curtain which seems to cut noise.

Call me a helmet whore, I've had a bunch of modular helmets.
The KBC is heavy.
The HJC Symax failed my roll-off test
The Nolan N102 is good
The Shoei Multitec is better
The Shark is my current helmet, best fit and comfort level for me so far.
The modulars are not as quiet as a good fitting full face helmet but the convenience is nice when riding all day, day after day.

I have the HJC Sy-Max II and the Schuberth C3....the HJC was too loud (see pluses below) and I replaced it with the C3. (NOTE CHANGES>>>>old brain; C3, not G3).

I don't know I would recommend the C3, primarily due to price.

Pluses:

Great venting...I can tip open the face shield (with the face module in place) and get fresh air, without wind burn on face or eyes
Great noise reduction...I've tried everything for ear protection (including orthotic inserts) and either they didn't seal my left ear, or irritated (orthotics)

Negatives:

There is vent right at the point of my forehead that irritates after two hours. I'm stuffing extra foam in the helmet to correct. I have a narrow head and I think the helmet is more suited to round heads.
Very expensive

Bottom line:

I love the convenience of mod helmets, being able to flip up for discussion or gassing up....the HJC fit my head perfectly, but was too loud...the G3 is fine in all other respects, but irritates my head.

I've been a Shoei person since WAY back when (Shoei head, I guess). I switched to a Shoei Multitec about 4 years ago and love it (on my second one). The added convenience for carrying on a conversation or taking a drink of water at stops far outweighs the slightly increased noise level of a modular (just another reason to wear earplugs).

:)

I have the Scorpion EXO 700 normal full face and the Scorpion 900 modular with built in air bladders to seal out noise and built in sun screen that flips up and down. If I had the coin I would buy a Schuberth C3 modular awesome helmet $700.00 ouch!!!

I have an old KBC flip (no longer produced). Decent, but I'm looking at the Scorpion 900. I have a 700 and really like it, so I might go with the 900.

Flips are quite nice for general riding. I can get major air at stop lights (I'm in FL), which is important to me. They're also much easier to put on/take off sunglasses when compared to a full face, as well as taking a drink of water, conversing, etc., without having to take it off. I've also flipped mine up while riding on super hot days to get a cooling air blast or to take a drink from a cage bottle.

Noise isn't that big of a deal, as I wear earplugs on trips. Around town/errand running really doesn't matter as I'm rarely over 50 mph.

On the other hand, I prefer a full face for colder weather.

I have an HJC Symax II that I use for commuting, riding around town, and when I teach MSF courses. It is noisier than my full-face Shoei RF1100, which is what I use on trips and longer rides.

Pluses of the Symax are the built-in tinted shield, and it is quieter than the old Nolan N100 I had. Minuses are the wind noise and that the tinted shield is not dark enough for my liking. Since I can easily flip it out of the way, why the heck not make it darker?

There are times when I do like the convenience of the flip-up.

I had a Nolan 102...all of the conveniences mentioned above worked for me as well. My wife still has hers; I replaced mine with a Shoei RF-1000 lid I got on closeout. I was looking at the N-103, but got such a good price on the Shoei that I made the switch back to a full face. One little nitpick for me on the N102 was that the half size sun shield was on the outside of the main shield, and on occasion it would drop down when I didn't want it to.

The only modular that I have owned has been a Nolan N102 and it's held up pretty well after more than four years of use. It's a little bigger, heavier, and noisier than a full face. I dig the chin strap mechanisim, it's easy to get it on and off even with gloves on.

I use a Shark Evoline2. It's one of the only open face helmets with a moving chin bar. In the UK that means you can ride with the chin bar flipped. Anything else is illegal. Good lid but a little heavy.

I have:

Nolan Trend - one of the original modulars - old - latch button both sides - pretty comfortable
Nolan N102 - wired w/Ed Sets - Fits ok - a bit louder than Trend - funky sunshield (took it off and use shades or dark screen).
Nolan N103 - wired w/Ed Sets - this one drove me nuts because on one side it would dig into my ear and I had to keep performing surgery on it (the helmet, not the ear).
Nolan N43 - Just got it and haven't used it yet, but fits like a glove and is highly convertable.

If I had any smarts (and seven hundred bucks), I would quite beating myself over the head with Nolans, bite the bullet and invest in a Schuberth C3 :)

I use the Vega Summit with Bluetooth integrated headset. in my opinion the shell is very big, makes me look like a space man from mars and the helmet is too noisy. The flip up mechanism also not smooth to operate. The flip down tinted sun shield rattles, vibrates and is difficult to see through if it constantly judders up and down while riding. Dont buy this model. my next helmet will be a Shark Evoline, due to excellent craftmanship, so i will stay with the flip up style, since i wear glasses and it is so much easier to fit glasses with this type of helmet.

Biggest issue with modular helmets are side impact zones and the latch mechanism. That said I would buy any Nolan or Caberg modular due to their consistently high ratings in the Sharp tests in the UK. http://sharp.direct.gov.uk

Nolan - Consistently good latches, Good side impact
Shuberth C3 - Poor side impact ratings
Shark Evoline - Poor latch mechanism
Shoei Multitech - Poor side impact, mediocre latch
Scorpion 900 - A touch worse than the Shoei
Caberg helmets - some of the safest, check them out if you can.
KBC -don't use one!
HJC - very poor side impact and latch.
Laser - Not bad overall better than most.

I have a Schuberth C3 and a Caberg Sintesi. Had a Schubert C1 for a long time, saved my head (but not itself) when I was hit by a truck.

Both have an internal flip down sun visor, which I like. Neither sun visor is quite as dark as I'd like, though. My C3 came with a pinlock visor (the anti-fog device), but I don't like looking through extra layers of plastic so don't use it myself. I don't know if the Sintesi has pinlock as an option.

The C3 is very quiet. Shape is a little odd, and the sizing is a bit small, so I had to selectively mash the foam a small bit in a couple of spots to make it comfortable. But it is very comfortable now with excellent air circulation.

That being said, I like the Sintesi just as much. It flows air a bit better, in my opinion, and it fits great. It isn't quite as quiet. Can't tell any difference in the weight.

I switch between the two all the time and haven't been able to decide on a favorite. Also have a Shark full face, but I like the flip up style better.

Oh, neither my C3 nor my Sintesi are DOT stickered. Neither were sold in the US when I bought them; the C3 is available here now but it is very pricey. If there were still a material price difference, and I was buying just one, I'd go with the Sintesi.

A couple of more thoughts, I also had a early Shuberth helmet, didnt like the fit or feel.
Loved the Nolans ratcheting chin strap latch, the external sunvisor was not good. Really like the internal sunvisor on my Shark Evoline 2, I added a piece of electrical tape across the top edge of the flip down sunvisor which really helps. Another strike against the HJC symax is that it uses plastic hinges, which I have seen break when a helmet fell off a parked motorcycle, not mine.

I have maybe 90k on a Shoei Multitech and the SO just finished the IBR with her Schuberth C3W, so maybe 20k on that. The Schuberth is more for round heads, but we spooned the front a tad and were able to make it comfortable for her narrow oval head shape. It is quiet and the helmet is well made, but friggin spendy. With comm, it ended up being a $1k helmet which is crazy. My Multitech cost $400 about 4 years ago and for an oval head guy, it fit surprisingly well. Usually Shoei helmets create a hot spot on my forehead, but the Multi didn't. The new ones have a removable liner, which is a very nice perk. No built in sun shade, but that's not a big issue for me. (The SO does like that about the Schuberth)

I felt the Shark and Calberg were a little on the flimsy side for my taste. Some nice features though. Both the Schu and the Multi have metal latch parts. That makes me feel a bit better about the compromise with the flip over a full face. My previous helmet was a FF Arai Signet which fit my oval head very well.

Pin-lock visors are available for both Schu and the Multi. No one likes looking thru more plastic, but in the rain the Pin-Lock does NOT fog. It's the best option out there by far, and I've used several from Cat Crap to Fog City to Respro Froggy mask. The Pin-Lock just works.
