Looks like I might have finally killed my XT.
Long story but HAD to get to work today (100 miles away). Stalled the bike just after starting and on re-start it seemed to only be firing on one cylinder. Had to keep going...nursed it 100 miles there and 100 back. Wont know how bad the damage is until I get time to delve into it but check out the exhaust!!20191214_155735.jpg

Probably not catastrophic. The Cat got super hot from the excess fuel dumping into it from the non-firing cylinder. Likely not so good for the platinum in the Cat. May need to address that once you get the bike running correctly.

Hopefully you just have a minor issue that caused the cylinder to not fire. Codes?

Good luck with it Stu.

These things are built like brick outhouses so it'll probably be fine.

(with a few dollars spent of course)

Your picture reminded me of the early days of catalytic converters. They were known to plug up frequently and even cause fires. Good luck getting your bike running right.

Imagine that same situation, but in a 1250. Your right ankle would have cooked. I have two friends, who complained about this in the new GS, by the position of the catalytic converter, with respect to the right foot peg

Thanks folks. It will be a while til I can investigate and YES...I need to move closer to work! I'm hoping/suspecting a failed coil stick...what do you think?
On my previous S10 that did 120,000 and still going, the only thing that ever failed was a coil stick.
Hopd I'm right coz thats an easy fix!

That rusty plug just shows one of the Yamaha Tenere designers very significant flaws that they seem continue to ignore for years and years.

hi stutrump,
are the holes that the coil sticks fit into letting more water in after you removed the metal bands off them, i ask as you know, i,ve done the same

Hi Rob.
I just changed the plugs but no change sadly. I can confirm however that taking the metal sleeves off the coil sticks makes no difference to water ingress. Sticks came out really easy (I always grease them up too).
Anyway...back to the begining now coz it wasn't the plugs. Bike starts but is still firing on one cylinder and stinks of petrol after running for a few mins

Swapping is good.
Assuming you've verified good spark on both plugs, I'd suggest pulling the injectors and cleaning them next.

I assume from all the heat the CAT was making, that fuel is getting to the non-firing cylinder, but it's not igniting there!
So it seems to me like it's bad coils, a break in the harness or connector between the colis and the ECU, or the ECU itself. The 4 spark output signals are each independent in the ECU, and there are two coils per cylinder. I wouldn't expect the two channels feeding the same cylinder to fail at the same time - and I'd expect a check engine light/code for any of the failures I've mentioned. Even the O2 sensor data to the ECU should have caused an error code. Has this bike been flashed? How about a Power Commander? Are the O2 sensors still there and hooked up? I'm baffled that there isn't an error code.
