I'm having a minor problem with my cruise control. The instrument cluster icon will randomly start to flash, and when it does, I cannot set the cruise control. Turning it on and off has no impact, it will still flash and I will be unable to set the speed. In order to clear the problem, I have to pull over, shut the bike off, and restart to clear the problem. Anybody else run into this and if so, do you know the root cause of the problem and how to remedy it? Thanks, bob

Yes, several of us are having flashing cruise light issues. Lots of discussions and threads about it over in the electric section and if I were a gambling man I'd bet money that your thread will magically appear there too. :) No solution yet tho........

The most common issue is a stuck/sticky brake switch. When you pull over... you brake. This may not be the issue, but I'd certainly check it first before stressing further. Also check for error codes in the ECU diagnostic levels.

Blown fuse and sticking brake switch(s) is always the first thing to check, but my observation has been they do not cause the flashing cruise light. On my bike, I can make the cruise light flash by intentionally holding the brake light switch on and releasing the cruise cancel switch. The double switch housing is supposed to mechanically prevent this from ever happening, but for some reason that appears to be the problem with my bike.

Are you going to replace the switch?
When my flashing Amber first occurred the bike was under warranty so I'm hoping the dealer will follow through with any repair, and since code 90 means faulty brake switch I'd think replacing the switch would be the obvious first step.
If my dealer refuses to help (my warranty is now expired) I will replace the switch on my dime, kinda waiting to see if a new switch fixes Mebgardner's bike first, no point in both of us going down the wrong path at the same time.
Sigeye had the same flashing Amber and code 90 and replacing the switch did not fix his bike, but then neither did replacing the ECU, relay, handlebar switches, wire harness, instrument cluster, etc.

With your replies of the time differance it took to fail after you messed with the switch, it just seemed obvious that it was the switch. I just bought another 2016 (used). So I'm sure I'll be dealing with this issue at some point. I am following all the threads related. Please keep us informed. Maybe we can hook up this winter for a ride or two if you show up here again.

Hi Bob. I saw your thread. With a handle like "Bob Dirt", I'm thinking, you ride dirt? Are you part of the AZ Dual Sport Riders Facebook (mostly Phx) crowd? I'm a member of the Tucson Dual Sport Riders (mostly So AZ) facebook.

Ha..I don't do Facebook.
I'm a desert rat and have been playing in the dirt all of my adult life. My boys grew up running the sand dunes at Glamis and the beaches of Rocky Point. I ride 4x4 quads and a XP 1000 RZR with a group of friends I've known for a long time. Some of those same friends have street bikes also. One of them has a Tenere and our first major ride was to Deadhorse. We do a couple of 2 weeks street rides every summer.

Crew Chief, sorry for the very slow response. My dealer is quite interested and has taken photos and even videos of the flashing cruise control light. He also feels it must either be the ECU getting confused when the front brake is applied, or the front brake light switch. My bike is still under warranty and I'm a very good customer (bought several bikes from this dealer) so they seem to be aggessively putting pressure on Yamaha. They also wanted the link to this website as I mentioned there were others experiencing the problem with the 2016.

@AKBob, my 2014 started the blinking CC light just the other day. At first I could turn the key off and then back on and it work for a while, but now, it stays blinking.
I'm guessing it is one of the brake switches. I'll wait to see what the diagnosis is on your bike and the act accordingly.

Last fall there were 3 of us who posted solutions for bikes that had the flashing cruising light syndrome. One needed a new clutch switch, one a new front brake light switch and one a new front brake cruise cancel switch. My point is that someone elses fix may not fix your bike.
If you read through the older threads you will learn how each of us diagnosed our problems and you should be able to follow through with your own bike. All 3 of our problems turned out to be either high resistance through a switch or a bounce in the contacts, and we found this by using an analog ohm meter.
My cruise has been working perfectly since replacing the light switch, even though there never was a problem with the actual light function.

I have sort of an update. No solution, but a path to a final solution. I telephoned the Yamaha Techline, 1-800-879-0078 to report the problem to Yamaha directly. I would encourage all of you having the problem to do so soon. When you get a live person, they want to know your store number. Don't worry about it. The Techline is set up for dealers to report problems but they will listen to yours and ask what the dealer has found, etc. The next step after calling them and giving them your name and contact info, is to go to your dealer and strongly encourage them to report your problem to the techline.

Yamaha works on basic numbers. I'm sure they know of the problem, but won't do anything until all the wheels squeak loud enough to where thy recognize they will have a big PR problem if they don't do a recall.

I also went to my dealership this morning and told them I wanted it fixed in polite, but firm tones. They have no idea what the problem is, but I suggested they keep beating on Yamaha until they figure out what the problem is and fix it.

Mine has recently started to cancel even while I'm at highway speed in cruise control with no touching of any controls. If you are sleepy it will surely wake you up when it cancels at 65mph. You also don't really want anybody riding on your tail when the cruise control cancels at highway speed.

If anybody learns anything through Yamaha, please respond to this thread.

I did give my dealer a number of links to the problem and presumably they in turn contacted Yamaha, but so far no answer back from them. It is a great bike but a constant irritation to keep pulling over to turn off and restart the bike. The mechanic at the my dealership is quite sharp and he feels it is the ECU and it is about $800 to replace it which is likely why Yamaha is not responding. He said he ran into this in another model Yamana a few years back and replacement, not a re-flash, is what it took to clear it up.

A friend of mine just had the CC fixed on his 2016 ES. Turned out to be a bad front brake light / cancel switch. He could induce the error by just pulling and releasing the brake lever. The CC light would then start flashing.
