Trevor, our World Traveler, had the same issue with his. I seem to remember he had it welded once, wound up replacing it in the end though.

What sort of use conditions led to this cracking, or was it an impact event of some kind? Are those the OEM spokes?

It's a 2012 with 110,000km, to me it looks like it's over torqued but I've never touched the rear wheel and I do take it off road but if I did do a hard hit you would think the rim would have a ding in it. Did a tire change back in January before my trip to Arizona and I did about 10,000km (6,000 miles) and this is what I found today.

I think you're saying there's no dents on rim, but if any, I expect the hit would have been on opposite side of wheel.
(edited - Sorry, maybe that's obvious)

Like Limey implied, it's hard to say in some cases. My guess is that if we knew better about how often the spokes were checked it could answer some. But I know Limey and he does look after his bike.

In others not so hard though. DCStrom has tens of thousands of rocky 3rd world back roads with the bike he has been living off of for over five years now. And I can personally tell you that he's a brisk rider. Old Git Ray and Helen put on a lot of miles all over Europe and the western hemisphere, much while knowingly WAY over gross weight and on dirt roads. We've had at least one owner who cracked more than one rim by collecting dents in his rims, and another who in retrospect applied torque by the "if little is good lot is better" method.

not sure if anyone noticed that the Suzuki Westrom 650 spoke wheels looks so similar to the S10.

What could have caused these cracks (over torque ?) ?

I personally think Limey's wheels are submerged under water far beyond what Yamaha ever considered testing for.
They're waterlogged. Hydrosaturated Aluminum? ;)

To make things worse I'm having the dreaded hard start for the first time so I Drained the battery today it's on charge right now and I'll give it ago tomorrow. $ 725cnd for a new rim and spokes and it's on back order for 2 weeks.

You Canookians are getting robbed! That C$725/US$541 rim is US$311 on Partzilla.com.

That SUCKS limey!!

As for your first "Hard Start"............
May I recommend not relying on your poor little motorcycle battery for the likely necessary excessive starter time?

I'd remove the Fuel Injector fuse and run the starter off a jump start automotive system. I don't know....maybe 3 or 4 15 second sessions with plenty of cool down time between each.

Then insert the fuse. Set the kill button to kill. Turn on the key. Allow the sweep to finish. Set the Kill to Run. Open the throttle Wide Open. Then hit the starter and force yourself to LIVE with a long session if needed. Obviously I wouldn't go past 30 seconds. (Will feeeeel like an hour)

Should be enough. If not, it simply reveals you are fuel soaked and will require either a "wait", or a pull the plugs and dry out. But I'm betting she cranks up.

Forgive me for sounding like you don't already KNOW all this. Cuz you do. I'm just trying to encourage you! lol

Thanks for the info Snake,
I'll give it a try tomorrow as I have the exhaust off right now. Just finished putting the swing are back together and was a bit surprised how clean the drive shaft was.
