Clutch slipping

Found the problem.... Measured the depth to the piston in the slave through the banjo fitting hole with the spring installed on the OTR slave. Fully compressed is ~0.670”. Removed the spring and installed the slave dry and pushed the piston in against the clutch rod and got a measurement of ~0.578” showing when the return spring is fully bound is causing a 0.092” interference or preload on the release rod. This would definitely keep the springs from fully applying pressure on the clutch pack. Going to trim a coil, verify compressed depth through fitting hole and retest.
Hi, was almost on the way to purchase a OTR Clutch Slave Cylinder till I read this thread.

Am on Barnett's w/ medium springs all round.

By your findings, does it mean:
1) have to carry out the modification so both parts can suit each other?

2) how is your review/feedback of the clutching after the everything is in order?

I also like only using 2 fingers on the clutch. As a matter of fact I only use one finger on my dirt bikes. I have always felt the Super Tenere has had too long of a clutch throw for my tastes but shorting the engagement distance usually makes a harder clutch pull. Not sure why my FJR has such an easy pull on the clutch with a short throw being it feels like it makes more power and torque. At least the lever is adjustable. I have it out so that I can use two fingers on it as long as I am not using my winter gloves. I get along well with it that way. when I get into really crawling slow rough stuff using only two fingers on the clutch is the only way for me. at that point I am riding it like a dirt bike and not a street bike.

Compatibility could have been impacted by my clutch pack wear but I doubt it. The spring behind the piston on the slave wouldn’t allow the clutch to be fully engaged. Trim two coils and throw it in & enjoy. It moved engagement from almost at the bar to very early in lever travel I’ve found. Would recommend.

ah okay, noted with thanks.

Additionally I also didn’t try it with the OEM pressure plate, I don’t know if Barnett did anything different to impact the geometry.
Noted.

I reckon can disregard the OEM pressure plate (Diaphragm type) as it works differently from Barnett's, albeit they're both carrying out the same function.

I like the Barnett's as it helps the shifting (up or down) to be almost seamless than before.

I initially tried with the softest springs first, then ½ soft ½ medium then, medium.
in the end, went with full medium.

I’ll eventually go the barnett route or rekluse when it comes time. My stock clutch feels like a weak link for sure.
BTW anyone running a rekluse from this forum? I haven’t checked but I assume they make one for S10.

Negative, I’ve been emailing them twice a year talking to the engineers since ‘14 asking about it.

just saw this post...I just got a OTR slave and am currently using stock pressure plate...so before this goes on I need to trim 2 coils for it to function correctly??

Have a dial caliper? Compress the piston and read the depth through the fitting opening with spring compressed with the end that sticks out of the tail end of the caliper. Remove the piston and spring and reinstall the piston without spring, install slave DRY (don’t even need to disconnect your OEM from the line) check depth again and compare numbers. If the depth measurement from face of slave to piston is larger than the measurement with the spring, you will have free play (what you want). If it isn’t, you will have pressure releasing the clutch so you’d need to trim some. I think it should be okay, I think I had interference due to the combination of the OTR & Barnett clutch and a used clutch pack but I cannot say definitively since I did not reinstall my OEM diaphragm pressure plate to try. Let me know your findings.

Hi All, I have a 15 ST ES and a new Barrett pack with all the springs. I'm looking for less tension at the clutch lever. Those that have tested the least weight springs, does it make the lever force lighter? Can it still hold the pack tight under load with lightest springs?

4 medium, 2 light right now. Holds solid. All light didn’t have enough grip. Might try 3/3 before I replace my cover gasket for good as it’s a fragile graphite material. $15 on Amazon, bought two so I have a spare. Reused the original a few times but it’s a little ratty though it still doesn’t leak.

I think using all the light springs has less pressure than the factory set up. I did half light half medium, never slips.

Hi All,
I installed the Barrett setup with 1/2 Med & 1/2 light springs. All is working well, I don't think clutch lever pull / tension changed either way, but initial engagement and grabbing the next gear with very little to no throttle on clutch lever release now is smoother and consistency less jittery.
Very happy with the purchase.

So I bought the Barrett under the impression lighter springs would = less force to pull the clutch lever, that is not what I got. I got smoother engage / disengage of the clutch which in turn will help with the hand, but really helps with the smooth on/off clutch operations - I will take the latter benefit now that I have experienced it.
