If you take my 750,000 riding miles and divide it by 5 killed deer that equals about 1 every 150,000 miles. I drove long haul trucks for about 2 million miles and killed three deer that I know of and none of them did any significant damage.

There doesn't seem to be any studies out there that indicate the whistles do anything, seeing as how deer only hear in the same range we do, no ultra sonic or sub sonic super hearing. Same results with roo whistles. Seems some Aussie truckers have killed many many roos.

Have hit several with my cars, but only close calls on the bike so far.

I do not believe the deer whistles are effective at all. Maybe in the sense that it will give you comfort. In the studies I have read, they all come to the same conclusion that there was no real difference with or without. One thing that sticks to my mind is, that when I was in the academy for LE, they told us that after approximately 60 mph we were "out driving" the siren. In other words, studies had shown that over that speed, by the time other drivers recognized and reacted to the siren you were right next to them. So, even though deer may have better reaction time, it can't be that much. And looking at most, they are driven by your speed, meaning that the sound has to be redirected forward. Loss of time and volume.

Guardian bells and deer whistles kinda make me chuckle and shake my head. Reminds me of all the junk on the dash of an Asian taxi.

HeliMark is right. If an AMPLIFIED siren can be over driven at 60mph, what is a whistle going to do? Besides, you first have to train the deer to run AWAY from the whistle. ::025::

The low mile used wing that I bought a few years ago came with some of the biggest chrome deer whistles I ever seen , but I removed them and 13,000 miles later totaled that wing by hitting a deer. Believe whatever you want but I think deer whistles are worthless.

I ride in the Florida panhandle and there are large rural areas. Many deer occupy the roadsides in the early mornings and twilight hours. I have the “whistles” on my bike and I can attest that the deer hear me coming and will stop and look for the sound. My riding buddy has whistles on his Harley also and we are believers. My next bike one of its first farkles will be a new set of whistles. People can make fun of me but while your laughing at me I believe another person less intelligent than my scoffer is given a rest.

Hit one and the bike pretty much stopped dead. Apparently I flew through the air and landed about 60ft away from my bike. Not nice. Lucky Im still here.
I rarely see any bikes on the road at night in the uk but I have to ride at night. I see deer here all the time even on major motorways and very close to city centres. They are in my opinion a real problem but nobody seems to care.

Yes they are at epidemic numbers in some parts of the UK, but as they look cute onChristmas cards, nobody wants to cull Bambi, or foxes. Now, if they looked like large black rats, I'm guessing the problem would soon go away.

I saw a documentary sort of thing on the UK fox story! Very much like our ever adaptable Coyote except they can get into anywhere... and they're cuter.

I have seen coyotes and deer in the middle of town; they followed a dry creek bed. But more & more new roads and houses are being built in what used to open fields; they have to go somewhere. I live "in the country" and often see signs for missing dogs. All of them on the smaller side. Apparently Corgis are a coyote delicacy.
