Am I correct that even Texas is trying to impose some sort of control on feral pig hunting? Like restricting the operations of some of the outfitters that conduct pig hunts? That seems nuts (if true), in a state as overrun as Texas.

I've never wanted to shoot a deer, or bear, or even a squirrel....but there's something about a hog that makes me want to lock and load.....

RCinNC, they have that effect on most everybody, not even PETA complains about hunting hogs. the hogs are pest and extremely destructive , carry disease , kill other animals . are extremely dangerous when threatened. a mother hog can have up to 4 litters of trouble each year and before the year is out the first litter is able to breed. some of the counties in texas have a bounty on them , bring in a tail get money . if any attempt on the state to regulate outfitters its about taxes not protecting feral hogs. hogs have been a problem since the founding of this nation , stories about hogs eating dead soldiers after battles in America abound. just read some civil war stuff and you will see. they are a most adaptable and intelligent wild animal in north America . I'm more of a fisherman than a hunter, and if I hunt I like birds more than deer. hogs now that's just war. kill them and leave them , buzzards have to eat so do worms ( says Josie Wales ) . if there is a positive its that it provides year round hunting opportunities for those so inclined. the young pigs are quite good to eat , not the old boars , they can be impressive as a wall mount if they have great cutters. deer around here average 150lbs ( big racks on the bucks ) a pig can be 350lbs and low to the ground , it will shatter a car down low the deer hits the upper hood and windshield . if I have to hit something bad as it can be it might be the pig , the hit will be low putting you over the handle bars probably , deer hit would be high in your head chest area ,thinking that would be worse..... got to do more thinking on that one.... have a few hog stories I might share later.

I don't think it would be worse to hit a deer; I'd rather take the impact higher up on the bike, rather than hit something with some mass that could actually make contact with the front wheel. Especially when you consider that, if the animal is massive and that low to the ground, like a hog, and you hit it with the front wheel, you're more likely to then run over it, rather than have it get deflected to one side or the other. That would be like running over a log. Even if you don't run over it, anything you hit that could forcefully deflect the wheel to one side or another at speed could be catastrophic and unrecoverable. Like Checkswrecks says, your wheels are like big gyroscopes when you're in motion; the faster you go, the more stable you are. If you upset the balance of one of those gyroscopes at a high speed, you've lost part of the force that's keeping you upright and stable.

I've seen a few videos from on board cameras on bikes where the rider hit a deer, and none of them resulted in a loss of control. One was on a Harley bagger (it might have been a Road King) and the other on a sport bike. On the Harley, there was barely even a wobble at the moment of impact; the handlebars didn't even move. Lots of damage to the fairing, headlight, etc, but after he hit it, he just did a nice slow controlled stop and pulled off the road. Maybe not that surprising on a thousand pound plus HD vs a 140 lb deer, but even on the sportbike the result was the same. As long as the deer doesn't actually hit you yourself, the impact doesn't necessarily mean you're going down. Unless the deer is leaping really high at the moment of impact, so that he clears the front of the bike and hits you, most of his mass is probably going to hit somewhere above the front wheel.

I'm not minimizing the danger of a deer collision; one big reason I avoid riding at night is because of them. But some of the crashes that result from deer impacts can be the result of just doing the wrong thing after impact.

And for our northern brothers who have to deal with moose.....yeesh! I didn't see a single one when I was up in Maine last year, but I was on high alert the entire time.

Used to feel that way until squirrels ate the wiring harness in my six month old Jeep. $1800.00 later....all squirrels in my yard get to die. I like to shoot....a lot....but steel is easier to clean. And, hogs are a problem well into Oklahoma. So, they're headin' north.

LOL, yeah, I'm pretty sure that would cause me to have a vendetta against squirrels too. They used to annihilate the bird feeders I had in my yard in PA, but I didn't live in an area where it would have been safe to let a few fly downrange at them. Between the squirrels and the bears, the feeders eventually had to come down, especially after I went out in my driveway late one night to scare away what I thought was a big dog, and it turned out to be a black bear scratching himself on the hood of my Elantra. About 25 feet from my door, and I'd closed about half that when my brain kicked in with, "hey, that ain't a dog...".

Was in Big Bend National Park in Texas last year. Came around a tight curve and two black bear cubs jumped into the road. Grabbed some brake and went between them. The one in front of me ran down the road right next to me and I could have kicked his little butt.

Started too then thought Where is Mom? Turned a little left and grabbed a handful of throttle!

Just hit another of the damned things with the truck a couple of weeks ago. Clipped it with the corner of the bumper and watched it spin off the edge of the road. It got up and took off limping.
Darned near normal around here.

At 70mph, police sirens get "over ran". I don't see how unamplified frequencies are going to work at speed. But, whoever invented the deer whistle is laughing all the way to the bank. But, FLIR in a helmet visor would be AWE-SOME.

Low tech whistles that I KNOW work are not SEXY to the pecker pulling crowd that ooh and aah at the rolling spaceships. The deer whistles are ultrasonic like dog whistles. I have many times seen the deer at the side of the road and the sound increasing will make them stop and realize a vehicle is coming. Don’t believe in them fine. The Michigan police put them on all their vehicles and reduced deer strikes 60% first year. FLIR can’t see around curves or through obstructions. My 2 cents YMMV.
