Haven't fixed the clicking noise yet. I will do it this weekend. What are the torque values for every bolt??? I mean the bolts of both triple clamps, handlebar bolts, brake calipers, front axle, etc. I appreciate your help because that noise is already driving me nuts!!!!

Thanks

Nicolás

Have you invested in a factory service manual?

Hey Nicolas,

Normally I would have already gone out to the garage and look up those torque values for you in my manual, but right now, Life as I am used to it has been interupted. I am preoccupied with Doctors, lawyers, insurance companies, motorcycle shops, and healing. I crashed (or rather something caused me to crash) on my HD XR1200 last Wednesday. I will be OK I think, a little bangged up, but it could have been much worse. I came out relaitvely unscathed concerning the most important injury, my head...... it slammed the pavement pretty hard. A concussive blow that caused short term memory loss, but nothing showed up on the cat scans. No dane brammage so far. I was in the ER for hours, being scanned and x rayed from head to toe. My bones (and head) are hard I guess.

Still, I am alive thanks to SHOEI, plain and simple. I've tried to convince a couple people I know to abandon their shorty and open helmets, maybe this will make them see the light. One guy maybe, the other , nah.

I'll try to do it for you by the weekend, maybe even tomorrow, my wife will be home tomorrow on the 4th and that will make it easier.

No, since I am asking. Is not that easy over here ( Colombia). You guys have some many way to get things there that are almost impossible for us. Not complaining, but it takes a bit more to get some things here,

Just curious if you had tried to obtain one... But for the record, anybody can buy a factory service manual directly from Yamaha, and to the best of my knowledge they will ship just about anywhere in the world, no problem. You can search just about any manual you need by starting here:

http://www.yamahapubs.com/

Not to mention there is always http://bit.ly/123qItY or http://bit.ly/123r7wj

For future reference the part number for the USA service manual is - LIT-11616-25-09 (I have both the USA and European service manuals).

- Front axle torque: 72 NM (7.2 m-kgf -or- 52 lbs/ft)
- Front axle pinch bolts: 21 NM (2.1 m-kgf -or- 15 lbs/ft)
- Lower triple clamp fork tube pinch bolts: 20 NM (2.0 m-kgf -or- 14 lbs.ft)
- Upper triple clamp fork tube pinch bolts: 26 NM (2.6 m-kgf -or- 19 lbs/ft)
- Front brake caliper mount bolts: 40 NM (4.0 m-kgf -or- 29 lbs/ft)

Tightening the steering stem nuts is bit more involved. First, you will need a special tool to properly torque the lower steering stem nut. Once you have the proper tool you first torque the lower steering stem nut down to 52 NM (5.2 m-kgf -or- 38 lbs/ft) to seat the bearing, then back the nut off to free, then re-torque it down to only 18 NM (1.8 m-kgf -or- 13 lbs/ft).

The upper steering stem nut is torqued to 130 NM (13.0 m-kgf -or- 94 lbs/ft) after the lower steering stem nut is properly torqued, but before you tighten and torque down the upper triple clamp fork tube pinch bolts.

But you two guys are right... I gotta' remember to stop buying factory service manuals in the future. It's a lot easier and a whole lot cheaper to just ask! ;)

Just wanted to bump this thread back to the top in case anyone missed it. I had the front end clicking since new, and always thought I was just hearing plastic rattling somewhere, or maybe my keys. :D But after reading this thread, I followed the advise of loosening the forks up, as well as the front axle pinch bolts and axle, then tightening everything back to spec, and most importantly, in the proper sequence. Sure enough, no more clicking! I never knew just how noisy it was until the noise was gone.

Thank you Dallara for the info. I had the "problem" and I simply did a re torque of everything and it is now gone. ::013::

Might seem like a dumb question but do you have a Madstad bracket? I thought my forks were going to fall apart until I realized that it was my Madstad making a noise.

Let's bring this back from the dead, because it just fixed an annoying issue with my bike.

About 500 miles ago (@3600), I started hearing a clicking noise on bumpy stuff. I just did the 4000mile service and checked/adjusted/tightened all the stuff there, so the steering head was all good and the brakes are ok, etc...

I was able to replicate the noise by getting on the bike, holding the front brakes tight and pushing down with all my force on the bars.

I just loosened and retorqued all the pinch bolts in order according to the service manual... Just like that, no more noise!

This site is great!!

And if your dealer doesn`t do that the handlebars can go out of line, don`t ask how I know :(

What size is that nut? I don't think I have any sockets that large.

I'll answer my own question... yes, it's a 36mm nut.

Had the same noise on my 2014. Dealer found the steering column a bit loose. Tightened that big nut that stares you in the face.
Mine was plenty tight. By the time my wrench clicked for 94ft-lbs, it just barely turned the nut

Okay, guys, which is it? I am reading post 28 and Adogoarza says the shop manual tightening sequence is to start with loose bottom pinch bolts then tighten the top pinch bolts. Next tighten the lower pinch bolts.

Fred43 on post 36 says the tightening sequence to tighten the lower pinch bolts then tighten the top pinch bolts.

Who is right, before I go out to the garage and loosen everything up? Tighten uppers or lowers first?

Shop manual seems to tighten lower pinch bolts first and upper pinch bolts last.

BUT...

I had that noise over small bumps too.

Retorqued triple clamps according to the manual : Noise still present.
Retorqued reverse : Noise still present.
Rotated fork legs in brackets and re-tried the two processes : Noise damned present.
Retorqued steer nut with specific Yamaha tool : Aaaah ?... No, finally noise still present.

SO...

Maybe my column has too much clearance in bearings, or upper triple clamp column diameter is just a bit loosen around the column (excressive wear ?), or maybe I become totally nuts with that noise (another possible incidence...), anyway the result is that I cannot make that noise desappearing, and no specific cause seems to be more "guilty" than any other (tire changing, Hyperpro springs replacement, oil viscosity, etc...), nothing changed on the bike but the noise suddenly appeared and that's all.

Just to say, if someone has found another solution to that issue since last post, please feel free to let me know before my irreversible brain damage ::010::
