Clicking noise over bumpy road!

Anybody with a clicking noise when front suspension hits bumps or bumpy terrain? I did check the steering head torque, triple clamp bolts, instrument cluster but no luck! A yamaha mechanic told me that this noise seems to be similar to the noise on FJR1300 front forks! He also helped me check the steering head, he said was ok, but despite that I did greased and torque the steering head bearings.. But I still have the same clicking noise.. Any suggestion or comment will be apreciated fellows... ;)

This may be dumb.. but mine does it..
Check the mini dash plaque in the front under the windscreen...
Mine clicks when on suspension hard.. and really annoying on the freeway over 70 it vibrates.....

I checked mine by holding the front brake and pushing down on the bars and I hear a clicking also. I also recently did the steering bearing check and torque per the manual and it made no difference.

Check the front fork springs. You might have a plastic guard down the center that might be broken or maybe a broken fork spring. Both are unlikely but that's what you describe.

Exactly! I did the same thing, compressing the front forks with the brakes applied, and you can recreate the noise.. It is annoying..the mechanic told me that the noise in the FJR was cause by the contact between the spring and the top part of the fork...also said that he did make few modification and testing with different springs with no results..so I am starting to consider to upgrade the front forks with ohlins, apparently they use different fork caps.. I would like to hear from people using ohlins forks modified...

You don't even need the engine on! It makes the clicking noise when the front forks move..thanks anyway.

I have Ohlins. They don't click, of course.
But my oem shocks didn't either. And I assure you, I beat the living crap out of them.

I'm gonna take a pic of the oem internals for you so you can see what Jaxon was talking about.
I'll post it soon.

Mine does it too, and it is not the steering head bearings. Might be the brake pads shifting in the calipers a bit, might be the lower fork leg shifting in the upper fork leg due to required clearances, might be a few other things. I am glad to know other's bike do it. Probably normal.

I better fit some Ohlins as a preventative measure :)

Or at least I will do if they ever start selling them in the UK, they only list the shock at present :(

They don't, and never have listed any front suspension products for the Tenere. And although they might change their mind someday, they have stated that they have no intention of doing so.

Only folks I know of with Ohlins forks are the ones that signed up for the "custom build" that Jaxon took to Ohlins and got them to commit to building. Ohlins had his Tenere forks for 5 or 6 months as they discovered the build was much more involved than they initially thought. And thus, reinforcing the likelihood they might not add a 30mm cartridge kit to their line.

Seems like they would though now that the engineering has been done once.

Noise by a bunch of folks might get them to reconsider?

I'd holler at Jaxon if you really think you want Ohlins up front. He knows the obstacles now.

OEM fork internals.
2 pieces of plastic.
One piece is the top spring seat that has the preload adjuster loaded against it.
The other is the long slender spring "guide" that also has the compression adjuster rod going down through the middle of it.

I just realized the external slotted adjuster on the fork cap does not actually connect to, or even "turn" the compression rod. Instead, it simply pushes it down into the fork further.



Anyways, there is constant load against this assembly at all times. So not sure how any clicking could be caused.

Thanks Snakebitten for the picture..Honestly I don't know either.. I see your point.. The picture is very good, I will show the picture to my friend the mechanic...I had been researching for this noise on the web, especially on yamaha forums and as my friend told me there is plenny of posts about fork noises on FJRs.. Now, FJR and S10 used different forks, one inverted and the other one traditional, so internals should be a little different.. Also, I heard about a cardtridge from traxxion dynamics, anybody with info about that kit?...tomorrow I will stop by the mechanic... I will keep you posted... Thanks..

What was the cost of the Ohlins setup, and what do you get in the kit :question:

Often US prices are so much lower, even with shipping and taxes the prices are lower than in the UK.

If the price was right (and right can vary depending on how much work I have on) I would consider a set if I could find a supplier.

Rasher - I'm headed to the UK in late July/early August - easy enough to toss the Ohlins setup in my duffle bag and bring it over with me.

I did not have the clicking noise on bumpy roads with the stock suspension. Replaced stock with Ohlins at 77k miles, and the bike feels awesome. Granted, the stock suspension was somewhat softer than overly soaked french toast at the time it was swapped out, but WOW! The bike is planted and handles bumps beautifully - even in mid curve at speed there isn't that sort of unsettled feeling to the chassis. I'm not a suspension guru by any stretch, but this setup definitely was an improvement.
