Buckeye56 and I (among others) traveled to the Cleveland show this morning. Yamaha had 2 Ténérés on display. Both were blue, one had side bags, crash bars and skid plate and the other did not.
We got to climb all over them (we were pretty early so it wasn't too crowded yet). No keys so we could not check out the bags. The seats were set at different heights so we could compare. Either one works for me; I could flat-foot the high position seat and with a passenger and cargo loaded it would be even easier (5'9", 32" inseam). Leaning side to side the bike definitely has most of its weight nice and low, though I expect there wasn't much fuel in the tank. Putting it on the center stand is so easy it felt like I was throwing it up there compared to my ST1300 and Trophy 1200 before it.

The little knob on the sidestand is in fact bent so it rides about 1/4" in front of the left footpeg, as Fred observed. It is far easier to just reach behind the peg and lower the stand by its foot.

Standing on the pegs, the bars seem like for me they could come up a little, but I don't think I need much change rearward.

Got to talk to Jeremy from AltRider, it was a pleasure to meet you in person! He is very enthusiastic and obviously believes strongly in their products. Hands on with the pieces, they show good quality work and are definitely going on my wishlist. Also chatted with Derek from TwistedThrottle who was very personable and helpful, and they also have items I now Must Have ;)

I must say, I was concerned about ordering a bike sight-unseen and put in a lot of thought and tons of searching the web and reading before I pulled the trigger back in September. Having poked and prodded and sat on the bike, I am feeling pretty good about the decision, and having looked at some of the aftermarket items I've been considering I am also pretty confident about what I want to do there too.

Come on, May! :p

I was there today as well and echo all the above. Alt rider products look well made and some of the bits ARE going on my Super Ten. It was clear to me after looking at the bikes and sitting on them, that the Engineering team had a GS in the barn as a bench mark. I am so happy I got my order in for one. There seemed to be a huge amount of interest in the Super Ten's all day.

Sounds good.. So tell us, what are the bits and pieces that are "must have".

The top items from Twisted Throttle that I want are the Bag Connection tankbag and map holder attachment, and the clamp-on highway pegs to bolt on the AltRider engine guard. And I'm leaning toward the SW-Motech rack to mount the Givi side cases.

From AltRider, the rear rack with Givi adapter is my top item, followed by the crash bars. Heck, I want all their items for the Super Ten! Budget will dictate that I spread out the purchases. I am not a hardcore offroad guy, so while I want the protective items in the long run, I'm not particularly likely to be bashing things against rocks all the time. The crash bars seem like the first of those items for tip-over protection.

I've already received my WaspWorks windscreen adjuster, and I got a PowerBronze front fender extender.

And of course there's the set of Givi Trekker cases. Those are critical to the 2-up touring goal for this bike.

The Alt Rider crash bars are the second item going on my Super 10. The Micatech bags bags being first. Alt Rider has engineered every part I reviewed to be a work of engineering art. No short cuts here or skimping on materials to save cash. Beautiful workmanship.

Being able to fondle the S10 was a lot of fun! I had meant to ask Jeremy about the procedure for dropping the skid plate for oil changes. I am leaning towards Yamahas skid plate as I have no plans to do single track riding and am mainly concerned about oil filter damage. Plus it is the cheapest option to date. I too want highway pegs mounted on the crash bars and I like the ALTrider the best. It dawned on me that the OEM top case is not big enough to house a XL full-face helmet so that has thrown a wrench into the plans! I was going to take a tape measure along to get the distance between the side bag lids so I could guesstimate how wide I could go on a top case without interference, naturally I forgot.

Regardless, I too am stoked about the bike even more if that is possible! May is still a very long way away. :(

Buckeye, you may want to verify that the OEM top case will not fit a full-face helmet. I think I remember Wasp posting a pic early on in his thread on AdvRider showing that it would fit. Some helmets may fit or not depending on dimensions but hope is not lost for you on this one.

Thanks for the first hand impressions! It's nice to hear other riders talk about seat height and the ability to get both feet planted on terra firma with the S10. That's a big deal for me.

So far, it looks like ALT Riders equipment is the way to go. Everything I've read about them says they're straight up, diligent and they're riders that know what works. A nice bike like the S10 deserves top notch stuff and I'll be ordering several items from them. It'll be nice to have some stuff in the garage to play with/polish/drool on, seeing as the bike itself isn't here yet . :p

The Strom goes on the truck today. A lucky guy in Wichita, KS, is going to be getting a great bike. There's no going back now!

Devin,

Yes I recall the photos. But I wear a XL Shoei RF1100 and it measures almost 15 inches front to back. I think the RX7 shell is not as long as that but don't know that for a fact. The problem is I would like to not have to schlep the helmet into the office each day. I like the OEM panniers narrow profile and in looking at Greg's photos of the Trax bags and the Givi Trekkers, there is a big difference in width. If I go with OEM, it does not look like a wider top case in an option as it appears that there would be clearance issues with the side case lid opening. All things that can be solved, just takes time and thought.

I want to start buying bits so the financial impact is spread out not all at once. Hopefully a solution will come to me soon! ;)

That is a big helmet! Oh well. Good luck in the hunt for your solution. I understand the need to spread the spending too, right there with you.

Sorry, Fred. I tried to get the photographer to do what I knew you would want, but technically he's my boss so there's no telling him what to do! ;)
