Excursion this past August.
Aleghany took me to Allegheny and beyond today. We rocked VA159 and were officially welcomed into the Allegheny Highlands just short of Humpback Bridge. We eased through Covington on US60E to Allegheny High School where I was all lined out for my first teaching job but turned down seven periods of Geography a day.
Can’t help but wonder how things would have turned out if I had taken it. Given how tightly VDEd is wrapped and a campus with a river and a mountain proximal, I would have likely gotten fired for all the time having my kids outside doing Physical Geography.
We scooted on up through Douthat State Park and George Washington National Forest, noting a couple of the gravel roads that are part of the MABDR route. The forest gives way to open farmland just south of VA39 at the eastern base of Warm Springs Mountain. After a spirited jog up the mountain, we stopped for the obligatory Dan Ingalls Overlook looksee and photo…suhweet!
Heading west, next stop…Blowing Springs Campground to check out the layout as it had been several years since I’d been. Scouting was a success. I later returned on my DR to spend a night and rode a bit of the MABDR.
Turning south on Jackson River Turnpike, we scooted past an exquisite old barn come tractor shed and could not resist taking some glamour shots. Creeks, streams and Johnson Springs were running full following last weeks deluges. We also looped through Morris Hill Campground at Lake Moomaw and picked a couple sites as a Plan B (Site 36 kicks gluteus should an occasion arise).
We had a mighty fine jaunt through the Allegheny Highlands and the lead character, looking damn fine for her age, never missed a stroke.
