CCT Question

I purchased. 2013 S10 a couple months ago in like new condition with crazy low miles. The miles were a little over 2100. I ran it to around 4000 miles before I started pushing it much harder. I have not redlined the bike but she has been pushed to around 115mph a few times.

So, I in the last week I have noticed a slight chatter (rattle) when I start the bike. That sound only lasts maybe 1 second. I’m fairly sure that sound is from the timing chain. It is possible this sound has been there from the beginning and I’m listening for sounds after reading all the posts about the CCT issues. This is the only time I hear the rattle is at startup and never at any other time.

So, should I be concerned?

I think it's too early to worry about.
I agree.
I ran my 2010 Gen1 for 60,000km before, as preventative measure, swapped out the chain and tensioner with the 2014 parts.
The chain I took out was exactly the same state as the new one. The tensioner I could not tell if there was anything wrong.

I would grease the shift lever, clutch and brake levers, I put 50,000 miles on my 13 and the only problem was rear wheel bearings and fork seals, I spent nearly a week in a motel waiting in a motel for new bearings so I now carry a spare set and expect to never need them.

Hello Byron. It is just my worthless opinion but if it was rattling on start up you did the right thing by getting another CCT. Mine rattled early in the miles too. I put the 14 model CCT in and have over 40,000 on that unit and still quiet on every start up. Be sure to tie the timing chain up good to keep tension on it so the intake cam will not jump. there is some really good information on this forum from some really sharp people. I used their ideas and it went smooth for me!

It is more likely that the noise comes from the automatic decompressor, than from the cct. If you say you do it only at startup. It can also be a high grade W oil, and it does not get fast enough to the valve train, if you are referring to the first cold start (but, in Saltillo....I don’t think this is)

Thanks for the info Rob. I've just ordered the same APE tensioner in the UK from here...

https://www.suzukiperformancespares.co.uk/product/pro-series-camchain-tensioner/3295/

A bit more expensive but quicker delivery.

Cheers

Incidentally, my bike is a 2012 Gen 1 with nearly 40,000 miles on it. I've ignored the rattle since about 32,000 miles but now it can be worryingly loud and long on startup so it does seem to be time to replace the CCT.

hi matt,

thats where i got mine £102, by the time the £67 one comes from the USA and parcel force tells you, you owe them £22 for handling it etc
probably will not be much difference, the guy fitting mine has used these for a long time has not had any issues.

Hi to all.
With the APE MCCT will the rattle goes away?
Is a CCT a comon problem in the S-10?
I have read this thread because my S-10 has a rattle noice (mechanical) mainly at idle or low rpm`s, I think is due to the CCT, that is why I'm asking.
is there any feed back from the ones using the APE MCCT? was any performance/noice/smoothness improvement?

Looking forward to hear some comments.
Have a great day!

Some of the early bikes, 11-12-13, had an issue at start up. The auto tensioner would release some tension and you'd get a second or two of heightened rattle. Over time, 40-50 thousand miles, this rattle would get longer and more pronounced. On these very few bikes the chain slap could allow one or both of the cam gears to skip a tooth or three. On most of the bikes, there would be no extra volume of rattle at start up. When it happens, it is obvious. Two or three times louder for more than two or three seconds. The Tenere motor always sounds like a box of rocks, from start up to shut down. It's that extra two seconds of double volume and 50,000 miles that you've got to listen for. Most have taken this tensioner 'problem' and just made it a once in a lifetime maintenance item, whether they had extra noise or not. It's fairly cheap peace of mind.
My APE brand tensioner leaks oil past the threads. The course threads are kind of a pain. But once set it goes for years. I've got a Graves in my To-Do box of parts, along with a Barnett pressure plate, longer cables, gaskets, Arrow headers...
