Good evening! I'm new to the forum and new to the S10. I've been riding for years, but this will be my first ADV. After a bunch of research and consideration of lots of bikes (Tiger (800 & 1200), Africa Twin, F800GS, V-strom 1000), I've narrowed my search down to the Super Tenere. I've got about $7500 to spend. My rides will be a mix of paved roads/touring and moderately rough gravel/dirt -- both solo and some 2-up. I'd like to get something with basic protection and bags. I'm almost guaranteed to have to fly and ride (done it before with other bikes) as I live in the rural midwest. I've got a couple that I'm looking at and wondering if I can get some veteran input:

Thanks in advance!

Welcome, from Texas.

In my opinion, I'd go with this one: https://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/mcy/d/beaverton-2013-yamaha-super-tenere/7534164097.html

It seems to be the best equipped. Two of the others have the Yamaha boxes. I have them and like them. But I don't do long trips, and they do have some shortcomings. The one with the Touratech top box shows a lot of soft luggage, but it's not listed as included equipment.

The one I picked has good crash bars, and skid plate. It has Givi bags which are higher rated than the Yamaha boxes. It has a Madstad screen and deflectors. It has the highest mileage, but lowest price. We have numerous members here with 100k miles, and one with over 300K. So, mileage isn't a real concern with this bike.

Others will be along shortly with their opinions. . . . everybody has one. Good luck with the search.

I'm with Sierra on this. It's the best value of them all in my opinion.
If the valves were done then it's a no brainer, otherwise you'll either need to do it when you get it home or pay someone about a grand to do it for you.
Other than the valve check, I'd say ask if he's got records of everything he's done in the way of maintenance. Steering head bearings should be lubed by now and coolant and brake/hydraulic clutch fluid could probably be flushed by this point. Other than that, it's pretty dang bullet proof if the maintenance has been done.

For context, I bought my 2013 with roughly the same mileage, well equipped and for about the same price. What sold me was the service records. Even if he does it all himself (like me) there's no reason to not at least keep a spreadsheet of when and what's been done.

Didn't see this when I responded. This could be a great deal even if you have to pay to have the valves done. Heck, even if you dropped $1500 to have it gone through and fully serviced you'd still come out pretty good and you'd have the benefit of knowing it needs nothing.

This one looks pretty good too. Only a few hours drive away...

To me, it's not the deal that the other one is. It doesn't have a skid plate, and only has soft bags. Which allows the bike to be less expensive. But, depending on how Dave is going to use it, that could be fine.

Good catch! I was looking at the ad on my phone and I didn't catch that it had the plastic OEM "skid plate." I saw the tires and soft bags and figured the owner used it offroad and assumed it had the skid plate.
That said, even adding a skid plate and a full service, he's still looking at less than $7k and he doesn't have to fly to pick it up. It really comes down to how he feels about soft luggage. The Givi hard cases are nice, but about as useful offroad as our OEM cases. If he doesn't take it offroad (or more than down some fire roads) then hard cases are a better option. I appreciate having locking cases, personally.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. So, for some context, I do almost all of my own maintenance on my bikes and cars. Valves I might farm out to the dealer -- I haven't looked to see how involved that is with these bikes, but I've done them before on some of my bikes, and had dealers do it on others. I do plan to do a fair bit of offroad riding with this bike. I moved to the midwest about 1.5 years ago and realized there are so many interesting looking dirt farm roads where I am and I'm only about 3 hours from the Rockies. My Triumph Thunderbird just wasn't able to take me where I wanted to go (and I realized I'm also just not really a cruiser guy -- the T-bird was my first cruiser and I've owned it about 2 years). Having said all of that, I do plan to see some pretty significant off-road use, but mostly reasonably well maintained dirt roads. With a few excursions to the mountains for some more technical stuff.

A real skid plate would be good, but I'm not necessarily particular about the luggage, as long as it has some. I've always been of the mind set that I add accessories as I realize I need them in order to enhance the capability of the bike for its intended purpose. I can always save for hard luggage later.

HEre's what the owner of the bike in Portland said:

"Hi Dave, The bike is still available.

I listed it with the hopes of a quick easy sale for the cash to pay some medical bills. I haven't even washed it :) It IS due for the valve adjustment. It's on my list for winter maintenance this year. I do oil and filter every winter. Some years its due, some its not but it's easier to keep track of. I like starting the riding season in top shape.

Needs:
passenger mirror - $15-$50 depending on what kind you want.
Valves adjusted (Maybe) haven't checked yet
Fork seals - (Again, on my list for to do's. Seals, fluids and all special tools for the job included. I've done it once and it's not too bad. You Tube University has several step by step videos)

Tires - bought new and went on a 6000 mile ride to D.C. and back. The front tire probably has another season, but the back however will need replaced.

The only additional cash output needed to ride this thing with confidence tomorrow is the tires and a mirror. A Saturday in the garage for the seals and whatever else you want to tidy up and your in business for $7k with your own choice of tires.

I didn't get a ton of responses and the ones i did weren't interested in a bike that needs ANYTHING but want a steal of a price. I'm not that desperate lol :) The idea at this point is to do the stuff on the list and throw it back up for 8k in the spring unless someone wants to save some cash."

:D:D No kidding! I think it'll come down to if I can get in touch with the ones in Rapid City before the bikes are gone. I'm guessing they'll probably all need similar levels of maintenance and odds-and-ends that need replacing/repairing.

Thanks Sierra1. Mine is available, and I have been to Nebraska three times on it so it's basically at home there. Message me if you're interested in it, we can make something work.
