If it's the high pitched whine you're talking about, that is the same as my bike. No clue what it is but I took it to be normal for the model of bike.

The pump cycles off after a few seconds. It does sound like something that is powered up. ABS pump somehow?

Mine does the same thing.
2014 non-ES.
At first I thought it was the Gauge cluster, but moving around the bike it sounds like it is coming from the top of the Engine area?

It's definitely NOT the fuel pump.
You can hear the fuel pump cycle on when you first turn the kill-switch on. It cycles back off after about a second and a half.
This is a much fainter noise that stays on the whole time the ignition key is on, even with the kill-switch off.

My 2011 does it too before hitting the start button. It always seems louder in the garage.

Maybe it is the servo motor for the throttle? I've heard machine tool servos make a high pitched whine when trying to maintain axis position. Perhaps it is doing the same. Still say it is normal though.

This is what I am thinking also, as it seems like it is coming from the top of the Engine.
I would say it is very normal for this bike.

I too was hearing strange buzzing noises when I first got this bike. I no longer worry about it. There are so many things going on with traction control, ABS, fuel pump, etc.

My dad told me something as a young man that I live by. Anything that's mechanical makes noise. As long as those noises stay the same you have nothing to worry about.
