I love my bumots...

BUT

A stationary tipover (pretty loaded) put a tiny crease in one of my cases, and the mounting bolts that go through the grab handles are just those black bolts and rust right away.

This in NO WAY diminishes my experience either with the cases or with Jason. It's just a thing that surprised me a bit. I'll probably swap the big mounting bolts out for stainless, but I'm slow to do things like that and they've gone almost 12k miles already.

Jason - the Bumot panniers racks are powdercoated steel correct? And galvanized?

Just wondered how people were making out with the racks developing rust spots, etc.

Thanks.
Hi ADKsuper10 - that's correct, the racks are mild steel that's first been galvanized and then powdercoated. It makes for a highly corrosion-resistant setup, but over time, normal wear, vibrations on the road, etc. will have you develop wear marks in the powdercoat which could run the risk of corrosion. I usually recommend when the racks are getting gnarly (depending on usage, probably 3-5 years or more) to either scuff them and spray with rattlecan black, or take them to your local powdercoater and have them recoated. If you ask the coater to include with another job they're already setup for, they probably won't charge you setup and the cost to do the racks should be between $25-40. It's a few more bucks than rattlecan paint, but puts you in good shape for another 3-5 years! :)

Thanks....

Hey Dave - thanks for the feedback! Sorry to hear about the tipover...probably no fun getting back upright if you were fully loaded. Despite their stout design and construction, BUMOTs can pick up some "character marks", but will definitely hold up better than lighter duty cases. I had one customer get a bit too close to his buddy off-road and they ended up trying to occupy the same space. If you looked closely, you could see some small scratches in the BUMOT box. His buddy, who was running BMW GSA LC OEM cases, didn't fare so well - his cases were completely destroyed and looked like they'd been run over by a tank.

The black oxide coated bolts can pick up some surface corrosion/discoloration over time, although I think BUMOT may be making a running change to plated which will address this. On one of my bikes that I used black oxide bolts on, I just hit the bolt heads with some spraycan black and they look like new again. We did have another customer get some custom stainless steel dome-head bolts for the upper mounts that looked better than an OEM part, but IIRC, cost about $10/bolt!

Thanks!

Hey, Jason. No biggie on the cases or the bolts. Both performed flawlessly, and held just a stupid amount of stuff on my trip. Maybe I can get some of the new bolts when I order my extra top case hardware.

Old post but thought I would add my .02. Bought these about 6 months ago and have used them all summer. They are CAVERNOUS and look great. Holds a crap ton of stuff, can mount / strap camping stuff to the top, watertight, pretty basic removal. As mentioned the only negative are the rusting / discolored bolts. Otherwise, highly recommend!

We are pleased to announce the new for 2017 BUMOT Xtremada Soft Panniers, which are available immediately at ADV Motorrad.

Designed to mount directly to the BUMOT pannier racks on your Super Tenere with the same ease of their Defender aluminum panniers, this quick-release soft luggage system allows you switch between aluminum and soft panniers in seconds - no adapter plates, no extra hardware, no loosening or tightening straps, just a rock-solid, waterproof solution for your off-road adventures. Xtremada soft panniers offer the convenience of aluminum panniers with the lighter weight and off-road benefits of soft luggage.

The Xtremada soft panniers provide 74L of total capacity - 35L full-size and 31L exhaust cut in the main panniers, plus two 2L pockets on the front and rear of each pannier. Dual-layer construction of 1100 Denier DuPont Cordura and 650g vinyl-coated polyester means these bags are built to survive in the roughest of conditions while minimizing weight on your motorcycle. On the outside wall of each bag, a third reinforcement layer of Cordura over a nylon insert provides for additional abrasion resistance if the bike goes over. The bag is securely attached to a 4mm aluminum plate which provides a strong mounting point to attach to the racks. Reflective 3M strips are sewn on either side of the bag to improve visibility and safety in low-light and nighttime riding conditions.

A roll-top enclosure with two straps and quick release buckles allows for quick access to the contents, and the straps can be used as tie-down points to lash additional gear to the top of the bag. Inside the Xtremadas, a dry-bag liner ensures the contents stay 100% waterproof. The inner bags are removable to make it easy to carry your gear with you while leaving the Xtremadas locked to your motorcycle.

The Xtremada soft panniers attach to BUMOT Defender racks (required and sold separately) using BUMOT's innovative stainless-steel, exterior mounted quick-release mechanism. This is the same QR design that has received rave reviews on the Defender aluminum panniers, and the key locks allow you to lock the bags to the rack directly. The rear-mounted quick release lever allows you to remove or install the bag quickly and easily. Xtremada QR locks can be keyed to match your existing Defender pannier locks, allowing for one key to open any case on your bike, regardless of whether you have aluminum or soft luggage installed. BUMOT's optional rack-mounted toolbox is fully compatible with the Xtremada soft luggage, and can provide an additional 3.5L lockable storage, keyed to match your panniers. As the Xtremadas are designed for BUMOT's exhaust-cut pannier racks, they are symmetrical from the center line of the bike and visually balanced when mounted.

We currently have the Xtremada soft panniers on our website at a special introductory price (fingers crossed we can make it permanent!). If you already have a set of BUMOT pannier racks or a full BUMOT pannier system, the Xtremadas will mount directly to your existing racks.

Any questions, please contact us at (585) 310-ADVM or via email.

Enough words....on to the pictures!

OK, Thanks! Good timing for me, for this post. I'm looking for soft luggage.

So far, the main competition (probably not considered competition by the Bumonista) is the Mosko Moto Quick Disconnect "Wedge" system and soft bags.

I was considering the Kriega's as well, but *waaaay* spendy, too much dinero for what they offer.

I'll be looking at these system carefully over the next few days.

So what are the dimensions? Same as the aluminum ones?

Hi Dave - the soft bags are a little tougher to measure dimensions, but the 35L (non-cut) is 17"L x 15" H x 8" D, with the 31L having a slightly smaller depth at the floor due to the exhaust cut. The bags will naturally be a bit heavier than a universal throw-over saddlebag, but will shave about 10+ pounds off the weight of a similarly spec'd aluminum system.

Thanks!

Hi mebgardner - Mosko makes a good set of bags and does have the benefit of fitting racks from different manufacturers - the Xtremadas are specific to the BUMOT racks. That said, the extra adapters and hardware required for the "Wedge" system mean switching between hard and soft bags requires tools and more time, versus turn a key, lift a lever, and swap the bag. :) They also end up being an asymmetrical system as they have to completely clear the exhaust can with a square-backed bag, versus the symmetrical profile of the Xtremadas due to the exhaust cut. Not a big deal for some, but drives the OCD side of my brain crazy. :) Finally, the ability to lock the bags to the rack without having to resort to braided stainless steel cables is pretty darn nice!

Of course, BUMOTs coming in at a lower price than other similar systems doesn't hurt, either....more money for your fuel tank!

If you have any other questions, feel free to call the shop at (585) 310-ADVM or send an email.

Thanks!

The BUMOT system for the XT1200Z Super Tenere includes the pannier rack, a 41L or 36L left pannier, a 45L or 40L right pannier, pre-installed pannier mounts, and all hardware required to mount to the bike. Numerous options are available to complete your system, including a 4.5L locking toolbox (coming soon) that mounts to the pannier racks, pannier inner bags, and top cases and mounts.

Overall system width is approximately 38" for the 45L / 41L system and approximately 36" for the 40L / 36L system.

Jason - which size panniers are shown in the above photos? Thanks
