hello all..

just wanted to know if anyone here has done upgrade or are intending to upgrade to Brembos? i am a great big fan of big powerful brakes as this relate directly to safety..

i looked at e Brembo website and so far there are no direct plug and play upgrades for e S10.. however i noticed that mostly e callipers are a standard part and only require e mounting brackets to fit into any given bikes.. they do have upgrade kits for e current yamaha ranges like e R1s and Fazers.. so i'm thinking its just a bracket issue..

anyone has done this can share or any others are thinking of doing this can i solicite your ophinon or suggestions?

thanks :)

* UPDATE *

Hello all,

After almost 5 years it finally done!!!

i have managed to complete my project of upgrading to brembos for my S10..

here are some details..

Master Cylinder is a Brembo RCS19
Calipers are Brembo GP4RS 108mm (4x30mm pistons) with Z04 Sintered Pads
Brackets are from 98-03 R1/ 06~ FZ1
(*re update- bracket fitment is 99% good with 2mm spacers all round.)
*abs works fine with the brembo MC and brembo calipers.

Fitment is a direct bolt on plug and play.

After bedding in the pads, the stopping power is phenomena.. 1/3 of the effort to brake ( i had the RCS19 fitted a couple of years back already). Very good stopping power from low mid and high speeds. Initial bite is very strong as can be expected from larger pads and high friction material. at speeds of 150km onwards the energy conversion is tremendous -> the speed bleeds off very very quickly but very controllable.

Brake feel is very solid and firm with no mushyness (i believe the master cylinder and calipers are a good fit)

weight wise the calipers feel (i havent weigh them yet) much lighter than the stock ones.

Over all i feel they are a very good investment and upgrade especially if one loads up the bike and go touring or if you have a pillion.. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to improve their brakes on the S10 :)

safe journeys all :)))

Have not even thought about it. I have used mine in a panic stop and they put me up and over the tank and my head smashed into the windscreen. The back tire never left the ground. On my bike the linked/abs system is more than enough.

i am a two-finger-brake rider myself, and i can definitely understand why Brembo's seem like a good idea. the stock brakes work good, but i miss the quick and solid feel of the sports bike. i also believe that the weight is a big factor on this compared to my last when it comes to stopping.

I have brembo's on my tuono and love them . It would be nice if the brakes didn't
require so much force but they do work quite well and with these all working together
perfectly I might add I would think a master cylinder upgrade would be enough . You
wouldn't want touchy brakes in the dirt though .

Keep in mind that you simply can't compare brake lever feel from a s/s braided line equipped bike to a ABS, linked brake rubber line equipped bike. You will never get that rock solid lever feel on a ABS bike due to the valve block on the ABS unit. Even with full s/s braid lines.

The brake calipers work just as good as any other brand. ;) You are talking about perceived input effort and feel, not actual braking capability.

I would try a simple pad swap to an EBC HH before spending a ton of money on calipers. There is more to be had in brake pad materials than in the mechanics.

NoryB, do you have a Tenere already? What bikes have you ridden before? It sortof sounds like a sport-bike which has great brakes and 150 less pounds of a bike. Even if you would put Brembo on this bike, you have more weight than a sport bike. If you are coming off of a Harley-esque type of bike, these factory brakes blow that out of the water. After ridden sport-touring Honda ABS bikes and Suzuki VSTrom 1000, these brakes are equal, if not better than any of those. Like the others have stated, try an after market pad, which will adversly be harder on the rotors based on heat and cause them to warp quicker. The ABS valves and solenoids are controlling the pressure applied to the calipers anyway. By going to a SS brake line would be an addition to the feel of the brakes.

Enjoy!!!

If you swap pads you should probably change all the pads because of the linked
brakes . I think a radial master cylinder is what your after .

I had Brembos on my 950 KTM Adv and thought they were crap. The Nissans on my old Triumph 955 Tiger were better. Not sure but the brakes on my GS1200 were Brembos, I think and I find the stock brakes on the S10 better.
Sorry don"t see what all the fuss is about Brembos. ::017::

Like some were saying, I'd hazard a guess that part of it is the pads, and possibley what model of Brembo brakes. I had a YSF1000R with OEM Brembos and those where among the best brakes I've had. I really like the brakes on the S10 though, and don't think one can do a whole lot to dramatically improve them...JMO. Possibly a different master cylinder might decrease the effort, but then you might lose some of the smooth operation.

wow thanx all for your inputs..

well what i meant in e first place by brembo upgrades was bigger callipers -> bigger pads hence more contact area for better brake energy conversion, esp at high(er) speeds.. not to the extent of brake fade.. i do understand that by changing e master cylinder, steel braided hoses, we would get better brake lever feel but that still does not address e basic converting of kinetic energy to heat when we need it..

on my s10, somehow the way the bike loses speed when e brake is applied seems somewhat less potent when compared with dukes and bmws with factory brembos.. esp when we have more load like luggages and a pillion.. what i'm after here is that ability to lose that energy on e highway, quickly but more importantly safely when some unforseen circumstances (idiots :)) occur.. well its good to know that others have experienced other bikes and their braking ability and have so much confidence in e factory brakes.. :) thanx once again for all valuable inputs.. this might be my project in e next few months and would definately share with all my findings.. heh heh

Hi there Noryb!! Yes this is an old topic and I hear a few of the guys not agreeing with the upgrade (before it was ever done). I think this is a fantastic modification. More brake material, bigger caliper pistons and adjustable MC at lever for personalized feel.

Thank you for posting this. While not cheap, it's worth the money for those who want the very best braking for their Super Tenere. Brakes are always a good upgrade along with braided lines.

thanks for the encouragement :)

i was sourcing for calipers and on ebay there were some good condition used brembo m4 that came off ducatis and triumphs that are going for low to mid $300s per set. coupled with the $145 for the brackets, itd be quite a bargain for about 500 bucks for the whole brembo upgrade :)) brembo m4 were out of stock from my local distributor so i went for a new set of gp4 rs for about $700usd.. for me it was money well spent for great performance and the plus side that they look really good :))

having said all that i have to agree with the guys who recommended a change of pad material. going from stock yamaha pads to sintered material made a big difference on the rear with the stock caliper.
