hi there, can you help me please, when should I change my break pads ? Is there a light on the dash board? or only visual check? or we can say generally 12 K miles?

I requires visual inspection - there is no dashboard indication.

It differs a lot from rider to rider how long the brake pads lasts.

I replaced the rear pads the first time at 55.000 km and the front pads at 85.000 km, but I use engine braking a lot.

thanks, that's great news, it has only 10 k miles, and I'm gentle with the break ( but rough with the gas lol 1 speeding ticket on the way uhh ) I'll check visually then

The wear limit is .8mm (1/32" or .03") for the rear and .5mm (1/64" or .02") for the front.

OEM Yamaha brake pads have wear indicators, the metal backing plate is bent in at the outer edges and when they touch the brake rotor the friction material is at or beyond minimum remaining thickness.
Chris, your metric to imperial conversion is wrong.

In general, Super T's wear the rear pads much faster than the front. In addition, the rears may not wear even, with the side you can see easier (while on the bike) wearing less.

I've used up rear pads in around 20,000 km. I'm heavy on both the gas and the brakes at times :)

My rears wore so quickly that I didn't think to check them until the rotor was messed up.
The linked brakes probably contribute. Rear pads on my vfr would last me 30k miles. More like 10k on the Super Tenere.

Just shows you how much the S10 linked brakes work really.

I'm thinking the Tenere's "back only" ability is what's causing the disproportionate wear. The Beemer I had was separate front/back brakes. The rear wore out quicker than the front on that. The ST1300 has linked brakes, and the front/back needed replacing at the same time.

They are pretty easy to access to check or replace. Since they are a wear item, it never hurts to have a spare set. Besides tires, probably the biggest wear item. I replaced 1st pads at 27k miles, pads and rotor at 44k.
