Hi everyone!
I just bought a ( new to me) 2012 xtz1200 with 51200km(32000miles approx) and really like to gather info on the bike I own. First time bike forum member but used to search a lot on different bikes forum for info and mods informations.
Really excited to try it next spring !

I like that blue, sharp looking machine. Looks like it already has a few goodies on it, any plans for mods coming up?
Thanks!
Looks like it has been well maintain!
For now I think it has everything I need...But I like to add heated grips and real handguards (Bark busters).
Will just spend my $ on a big maintenance , just to check if everything is on point. I just change oil and coolant. Will have the valves check by a Yam spec. Because the previous owner decide to not have them check.

Would make sense to update to the latest CCT while in for the valves.

Wiring for the heated grips is already there, under the right hand side panel.

What Boris said. Check to see if the Cam Chain Tensioner has been updated. If not, consider doing that before 80k kms if not when you have the valves checked. Not un-common for no re-shimming at the first check interval. Next valve check/service is at ~83k kms or so. Every 26k miles for the US bikes. There have been failures, but it's not something to stress over. Most have been well over the 80k kms mileage. Mine was at 83k miles on my 2012. One of the first.

I suppose if you're going to have the valves checked now, you might as well have the CCT replaced at the same time if it has not already been done. Then you can safely go another 40k kms to the next service w/o worrying about it.

Have fun with the bike. Lots of good riding on your end of Canada. Not to mention a bit South. ;) Just watch out for the Moose!

I got the Oxford heated grips, make sure you specify the adventure models. This bike has hand grips that are about an inch longer than regular grips. Maybe look into a Kaoko throttle lock if you do a lot of highway miles.

When it came to maintenance, I did my own valve check/adjust but that's up to each person and their own ability and confidence. Mine needed a few valves set, one was loose which I rarely see. I put a manual cam chain tensioner on the bike for peace of mind. I'm almost due for the second valve check so I guess we'll see how it plays out.

Yes! Oxford adventure . That’s the one I was looking for.
For the valves clearance on the S10, I must say that it looks fairly difficult compare to my last DR650! There’s a Yam 5stars dealer who quote the job for 6hours at 60$/h. I think its a fair price for peace of mind and not screwing the engine!
And about the CCT I have to understand the problem with the actual one.

Thank you for the info! Good to know that!
My plan was to fit a Eastern Beaver 3 circuit for future electrical add on like lights or heated grips.

And about the CCT I have to understand the problem with the actual one.
The original CCT loses tension in some cases. It's both spring and oil pressure regulated. It will allow loud rattle on cold start for a bit before it becomes so loose that it allows the cam chain to slip. If it slips, the valves contact the pistons, (usually just one piston, one or two valves), and that's an expensive repair.

If it's rattling for more than 10-20 seconds at cold start up, it needs to be addressed. It's cheap to do preventatively. It's very expensive to deal with if it fails and the chain slips. Most failures occur around or after 50k miles. Yamaha has pretty much come out and said to replace the original Gen I CCT before or at the second valve adjustment. There have been not one, but two revisions to the CCT since the original 2010-2012 CCT.

Easy to know what CCT you have, shine a torch up under the frame rail on the right hand side, if it has 23P stamped on it, it's the original. 2BS stamped indicates an updated Yamaha item. Takes 30 seconds to check.

In the UK a new CCT is around £180 (315CD). I know the part is much cheaper in the US, perhaps also in Canada?

Ok! Wow, thank very much! You made it pretty clear to understand. For now, when I start the engine I didn’t notice any strange ratteling sound.
For sure I will look to change the CCT at the same time as valves clearance.
Did Yamaha came out with a new design, better replacement part for it , or you have to go for an aftermarket option ?
