Nice that you found this before it stranded you out in nowhere land.
I have over 221,000 miles on my front wheel bearings with no problems.
To say riding off road could damage bearings is nonsense, You would have to destroy the rim before it would ever harm the bearings.
Even the crashed Tenere that I purchased with a smashed front rim the bearings felt fine. [but I would never use them]
Tenere riders need to keep an eye on that right side rear wheel bearing though. It is the same part # as the front bearings but is much smaller than the left side rear bearings and just doesn't last as long.
