Well, it's about 500kms, so you'll need about 30 liters of fuel, if there is gas at Mt Dare Hotel. ;) Less if your speed is below 85 kph or so. Don't pass known fuel for unknown fuel.

This is a very good example of why you should take the time to put your location in your profile. You'd get a lot better response from an Aussie than us North Americans.

Welcome to the forum. Please go post an introduction. Tossing this out as your first post is like some desperate cry for intervention. If you don't know the answer to your question, you should probably not try and cross the Simpson desert.

Learn to use Google.

And again, please put your location in your profile. You will get better results and it gives your post context. Unless you are going cross country mate, it is about 500 km from Birdsville to Mt Dare following the track across the Simpson desert, and another 100km to Finke. Check out the link I added to the previous post.

Here's another, since you're a bit slow. LMGTFY

@squarebore - Know more than I do? Please share. Otherwise, you can guess the next part.

Hi there Mark, Having done that run more than a few times I suggest you stash fuel at the West end of Munga-Thirri National Park. You then backtrack to Birdsville and refuel. Grab your fuel stash on the way out and you are good to go. Be mindful of the sand dunes as they will eat up your fuel supply. This route has very little 4 track and is around 600 KM total.

If want to play it safe just go Birdsville to Finke via French Line West to Colson Track North. You will then cut across West through the Rodinga Range. This is where it gets tricky. You are going to need a map to direct you to Alice Springs. It is an Aboriginal community with fuel and lodging. The crime is very high and they do not take well to whites.

I cannot stress enough about fuel. Just from Birdsville to Alice Springs following the 4 track and a few dunes you are looking at over 500 KM. Just be prepared.

Good luck sir!! It's a very fun ride!!

Eric is one of the most knowledgeable riders on here. Maybe that was a little harsh. He is a good guy and knows his shit about the S10 and has done some serious long rides for years.

Here is the problem. I am trying to help you MarkS10. But asking how much fuel you need to go somewhere with very minimal points of reference makes it sound like you didn't look at a map or develop a route first. You didn't ask the S10's range or fuel usage rate, which leave lots of variables unknown. The lack of an introduction post means no one has a clue if you're a beginner or an expert rider or somewhere in between.

From the info given, I stand by my original answer. Meaning you would need to take some extra fuel to make it across the Simpson desert from Birdsville to Mt Dare.

If squarebore is to be believed, 65 liters would get you around the desert on the much longer route. That doesn't make any sense based on the maps of the region and your original statement. But you offered no clarification or reasoning why you didn't think it was 500 kms between the points you referenced. No one can help you if you don't give better information in your question or respond why offered info is wrong.

Intervention is when others give you the suggestion that perhaps you're biting off more than you should chew. If you're going to try and ride the 270+ kilo S10 across deep sand for hundreds of kms, and you're not already experienced doing so, it's likely not a great idea.

Help others help you. Put your location in your profile and post an introduction so that others can help you better and your future posts have context. Just posting to the regional section of the forum doesn't limit the responses you will get.

And btw, if you got upset about my posts here, good luck dealing with ADV. They will eat you alive, in graphic detail.

Are we sure he's real, and the post is legit?
I will tell you his posts might be legit, but I have to admit mine was not. At least the part about me riding it. Another one of my lame attempts at dark humor. I have been in a lot of cool places around the world as a young man. Simpson Desert was not one of them.

One thing I would recommend is to use extreme caution if this is a first attempt at a ride through a desolate spot.

Really have to question anything you say now. Getting a track record of BS.

It's not so much what you say but the manner in which you say it. You can be very condescending which comes across as rude and abrupt. I'm guessing you wouldn't be a very good teacher.

My guess of 65lts is just that, a guess. It's based on fuel usage when I rode in the area fully loaded on a DR650.

Chris caught us all out with his BS. You've called him on this before and I didn't believe. Now I won't believe anything he says again.
