Is the fact that it's a Honda Optimate actually relevant, or is that just rebranding of the original product so Honda can increase the price by 50 percent and sell it in their dealerships? Is there something involved in the process used by these Optimates that would make them somehow model-specific?

You nailed it RC, it's just a re-branded unit to sell in Honda dealerships. In this case, it's actually a BETTER price than the un-branded version, so good find from Cycledude! My link was $65 US, his is $56 US. Nice savings on a first rate unit.

I got turned on to Optimate from my UK riding friends back in '03. The brand has been around for a long time and has a very good quality reputation. They offer a variety of versions, but the 3 is what you want for AGM batteries.

plenty of choices ! I have no idea if one brand is better than than another but right now my plan is to stop at my local Honda dealer to see if they have any or could get me one.
seems like desulfating chargers have been around since about 1995 but I never even heard of them until about 8 years ago, maybe I just wasn’t paying attention.

Thanks, OldRider. Frankly, up until this thread, I was unaware that these combination chargers/desulfators existed, and it's helpful to have some different models (and real world experiences) to do some comparative shopping.

Keep in mind that 2 AMPS (as recommended by YUASA) is all you really need for powersport type batteries regarding charging/maintaining/desulfation.
hi,

ordered one of these from amazon not had yet, can i ask as you say trickle charger, if its connected up to the bike and the battery reaches fully charged can it stay attached and it ,ll keep it fully charged ie hold it there by maintaining it like my optimate does, or does it have to br removed from the battery once charged reached
ITS OK , ITS COME I SEE IT DOES TRICKLE CHARGE and can stay connected
cheers

+1 for the CTEK, I've got them on a couple of bikes in the garage, they come with the fly lead but also come with a crocodile clips adapter which is quite useful

Most of them come with the multiple lead set up. The Optimates all come with standard battery crocodile clips with an SAE so you can clamp it on if need be.

Rob,
Which one did you purchase?
I am pretty sure all the GENIUSs are chargers, maintainers and desulfators.
If you received yours already I think you will be impressed with the quality
of the unit, wires, alligator clamps and the mounting bracket. The only
reason I recently purchased a GENIUS 2 is that it is a much more compact
unit when compared to my older GENIUS 3500. Make sure to read the manual
throughly as there are many features to take advantage of.
Let me know what you think of the unit.
Cheers,
MFP

Is the Optimate connector the same polarity as the Battery Tender connector?
Yes, both are SAE standard. Caveat, the older Optimate, (2004ish), used a different connector that was a plain plastic 2-pin connector that's pretty available. You'd only find this if you bought a used older unit.

I have one. . . . a 3+. . . . don't know where it came from. I have it hooked up to my mower, 'cuz I thought it was low quality. I'm thinking now, that I'll put it on the behemoth. I noticed the other day that it was desulfating the mower battery.

If the mower one is old enough, the connector will be white plastic. If it's black with round pins, it's SAE and same as the Battery Tender. I just cut the white one off and installed a SAE one day. The 12V pin is NOT the exposed one....

Yeah, it black. I think I got it with the ST 1300, which would put it at an '11. . . . but, I don't remember ever using it. o_O I figured I'd put a volt meter on it to confirm, but I also saw that it warns of reverse polarity without blowing anything up.

You can always try using a copier to enlarge the print/images on the pages you choose to copy.
Also if you have access to a scanner you can scan the needed pages and when you open the file on a computer you can set the viewing percentage to 125% or more.

Or try taking a picture with your phone and pinching to zoom in (assuming you've got a decent camera in your phone)
