Hey folks,
Searched around but not 100% sure on my thinking...

I'm upgrading my '12 S10 w/ 35k on the odo to the '14 clutch basket and a local buddy suggested I might want to go ahead with a new Barnett clutch also. I'm keeping this bike long term so this should be a needed investment.

From their site; http://www.barnettclutches.com/1312/yamaha/0/0/2013-yamaha-xtz12-super%20tenere.html, I see the 'Yamaha clutch plate kit - kevlar' which has the plates and steels. Do I also need the 'coil spring conversion kit' for this upgrade?

I have the stock clutch plates along with the Barnett pressure plate and the stock clutch plates work well.

I would definitely recommend the Barnett spring conversion kit. I never did like the way the stock spring felt and the Barnett kit made for a lot smoother clutch release. You don't realize how bad the stock pressure plate is until you change to a Barnett one.

I got my Barnett stuff from him. Great service and price.

Thanks gents,
EJ, did you just get the Barnett pressure plate and not the new plates ? Don't want to be cheap, but if I can get by cheaper that'd be a plus!

I did the Barnett pressure plate and springs but stuck with OEM clutch plates. I have found in many bikes that oem plates and discs last longer are smoother and don't expand with heat as easily as the non oem parts. That's been my experience. I got the Barnett parts from Jaxon at ride on adventure. I feel the same for brake pads.

I did new stock plates (had them already). New Basket and the Barnett.

I blame the stock clutch "washer spring" for wearing my clutch parts out.
I think I went with the heaviest springs on the Barnett.

Did you notice any discernible difference between the stock diaphragm spring compared to the Barnett pressure plate? I too changed out to a new '14 basket, new plates, shims and new diaphragm spring, but still get a little 'shudder' on 1st gear release on take off.

Re: Barnett clutch & '14 basket question...

The feel of the stock clutch was not linear, with the friction zone being very short. With my 12 loaded down, 2 up and gear in the mountains I could feel minor slipping here and there. I mentioned that to Jaxon and he suggest the Barnett plate and springs. Now it's a very smooth linear release. It's very predictable. No sense of slippage ever. I went with the heavier springs and didn't like the clutch pull, too hard. So I mixed the mid springs with heavy ones and that's been great. I never had any chatter with either setup.

Yes.
Stock was "eh". Hotter eng and outside air temps - it seemed to drag and the engagement point seemed to move. Lower engine and outside air temp - seemed ok.
Barnett - Smooth. Firm, even operation. Hookup point is the same all the time.

I don't notice any vibrations (old or new basket) or shudder.
I have about 10k miles on the Barnett, Basket and Plates since I put them in last winter.

Now, if only my rear drive seal will show up...... (shh! Don't tell the BMW riders).

Hi there, do you have the Gen 2 ST? I always liked the Barnett clutches on my early KZ's. I do have to say I might go with the Barnett after I wear out my current clutch. I really like the light pull and feel of the OEM one though.

I have a 2013 model with the 14 clutch basket. The OEM plates work fine, it's the Barnett multi spring pp vs the OEM single cone style spring is where the big difference is.

I suggest running stock fiber and steel plates. They tend to work best. The 14+ basket along with the Barnett is a great set up. I’ve been running it for years.
