Ok...topic no.2
I've seen videos where people have slowly undone the bolts holding the Auto Chain Tensioner till it clicked and then tightened the bolts back up. This allowed the tensioner to think there was enough slack in the chain to extend out further to take up said slack.
What I would like to ask is....will this method work on the S10 factory installed chain tensioner being that it is hydrolic and should extend out as needed?
I've been considering a manual one but I first want to see if I can do anything with the factory unit. There is certainly some slack in the chain based on the noise so looking for easiest fix to start with until I sort out which way I'll tackle it.
Cheers
P.

NO............. throw in a GRAVES manual (MCCT) and you will be good, or throw in a new "auto" unit. (CCT)

If you don't feel comfortable with this type work ask a friend to help or take it to a shop.

Thanks for that. I just wasn't sure about this factory installed unit. I'm not too far away from doing a valve check so I may replace the chain and the tensioner at the same time and I'll look at the option of a manual CCT then.
Thanks for the suggestion!

If you do that to this bike and hear a click, it's probably the timing jumping! Don't do that. The auto tensioner does not have distinct steps so there is no clicking associated with it extending.

First question; what year bike? #2; how many miles? And a point of interest, the chain will last for a couple hundred thousand miles.

Ok, 57000 miles. The 2014 already has an updated tensioner. Do you know if the previous owner had the valves checked on time? On the next valve service would be a good point to replace the the tensioner as a maintenance item, either manual or the newest auto. Do you have a recording of the engine noise that might be excessive? These engines are a bit industrial sounding, some noise is perfectly normal. The infamous tensioner problem was on the first gen bikes, for the first few seconds after a cold start there would be an all hell broke loose noise from chain slap. Mine started around 40k, many bikes still have the original in them, I went with the cheap Chinese tensioner, works fine, weeps a little oil. I have a Graves in my To Do box for some day. Again, what you're hearing may be normal.
