Anyone Make Low-Profile Luggage Rack?

Does anyone make a luggage rack that sits below the rear seat (about even where it would mount)? I noticed all of them seem to sit even with the rear seat and there is a compartment or void about the thickness of the seat under the luggage rack which I would not use. The reason I ask is because I would like to put a low-profile tail bag on the bike for around town, and if the rack were two or three inches below the rear seat that would make the tail bag lower for swinging my leg over it to get on the bike. I did a quick search and did not see what I was looking for. Thanks

Same here Dan my friend. I bought a nice medium to large size BMW soft top bag when I owned my BMW R1200R, but I only used it one time because it is so hard to get on the bike with it, and my girlfriend has even a harder time since I am on the bike when she is getting on it. I do a lot of day trips and don't really want side bags/cases (too much storage and bulky) but I would like a little storage. I thought about a tank bag but I have never owned one and am not sure I would like it (don't want a buyer's remorse redo of the BMW bag). The tank bag is something I am looking at though as well.

After using a tankbag for awhile you will wonder how you ever got along without one.
Over the years I’ve had a few different tankbags and they were all great, bought my 2013 used and it came with a very nice Givi tankbag that mounts to the gas tank filler ring, a very simple push of a button and it lifts right of for refueling, I love it !
You do realize that the rear seat removes easily with only two bolts ? That pan under there is actually intended for use as a small luggage rack and it is even equipped with tie down points.

BUMOT makes a pretty awesome rack. It's about the same scale as the oem, but far far more stout. Comes with the riser for seat top evenness, but the bolt pattern is either there or can be transferred to mount low.

I'm confused. All of the luggage racks sold for the Super Ten can be mounted with or w/o the OEM spacer. So, either at the level of the seat or w/o the spacer, at the level of the base under the seat. I always remove my spacer, rear seat and grab handles since I ride solo. That gives a long, even surface for what ever.

As to swinging a leg over a top case, step on the left foot peg, step up, swing over and sit down. Just like mounting a horse. The side stand is plenty strong enough. I weigh 250 w/o gear and have been heavier. 160k miles of doing this on an FJR, 109k miles of doing this on my Gen I Super Ten and 25k on the Gen II w/o any issue.

What kind of rack is this on the Worldcrosser? Is it a modified OEM rack? It looks shorter and sits lower than the production bike.maxresdefault (1).jpg

All good comments guys. Thanks

I never liked to put that much weight on the side stand (I am 265 right now) but I do think you are correct that is the best way to get on the bike with a top case or tail bag on it. My BMW medium-size soft tail bag is very nice and I want to keep it and occasionally use it so I will test out your method when I do.

I think I will get the tankbag and maybe keep exploring options for the luggage rack. I have never really liked the OEM one. It looks cheap to me (plastic) and I see no point in it being even with the seat (I prefer the lowered look like the blue bike above). I will look into leaving the spacers out as well.

I carry a girlfriend (she rarely lets me ride without her) so the back seat will always be on it. I have never had the seats off yet. I only have 470 miles on it but I will check it out. Thanks again.

I think the WorldCrosser just has the luggage rack removed. It's really just a parts bin bike. Nothing custom on that one. The original had a non-functional fuel cell back there.

Have a feeling it won’t be many more years until I won’t be able to swing my leg over the seat to mount my Tenere, for me the top box is no problem because I have no problem keeping my leg in front of that. I really should invest in a new exercise bike, my old one woreout about 10 years ago and I never replaced it.

It's a no-rack-at-all bike. It has the low pillion seat with strap across it, so basically a base model. The ES in the UK has a thicker pillion seat and grab handles instead of the strap plus a base to mount a top box. Take the base off and it looks like that underneath.

Edit: what EricV said...!

It looks bad ass but it is probably not practical for touring without the rack on it. 1-2017-Yamaha-XT1200Z-Super-Tenere-EU-Yamaha-Blue-Static-001.jpg

I can plainly see the rack on the worldcrosser.
It's like ErikV said, the spacer has been removed, so it is even with the rack under the rear seat.
If the rear seat was removed, you would have a long solid area to attach things to.

After looking at the pics again, I think you're correct, the rack is indeed on the WorldCrosser bike in the pics, it's just been bobbed. The normal rack hangs off the back more. Bad pick of my rack w/o the spacer. You can see there is still a gap there, and how far past the brake lights it goes.

So, if what you were looking for was a shorter rear luggage rack that you could fit w/o the spacer to drop it below the rear seat level, and it wouldn't hang out the back, this is your rack - Link Pic below shows with the spacer still in place and their back rest.

Found this pic on a Hepco Becker ebay auction for pannier racks. Note the stubby rear rack insert. That looks more like what's on the WC.

The Altrider rear rack can be installed at seat height...with their under mount bracket
Or... just the top plate mounts to the spacers making the rack even with the pillion after removing the rear seat.
Altrider also has a matching pillion rack that makes a long flat surface when used with the rear rack in the low position

Touratech also makes very similar rear & pillion racks
