I can usually get 50+ if on state highways or back roads. Today it was the super slab for 4 hours at 80 and I averaged a bit over 48mpg

Wind direction, travel speed, and altitude are the three biggies when it comes to mileage. Everything else (windshield, how much baggage, ride mode, tires, etc.) make very little difference,

I am in T mode all the time. I commute 22 mile round trip everyday which include a lot of traffic, so some idle time waiting at lights. I get 45 to 47 all the time. Then on weekends I spend time at a lake 60 miles away, and take country roads to get there. Speed ranges between 45 and 65, I consistently get low 50's based on filling up when I get there. I ride to enjoy the scenery most of the time. Love the S10, hate the sound of the engine. I weigh 226 by the way, and have Puig touring screen and a trunk and no bags.

My averages since I've owned my bike. It's still not considered broken in yet, so hopefully the MPG will get better. About 20min a day at 75+mph and 20min a day below 30mph.

The higest MPG I've gotten was oddly a ride through the mountains and canyon riding. Still don't really understand that lol

When you have the right performance goodies T mode with the touring flash
Is really nice for carving up and down mountains !! I get between 32-50mpg

My experience with the 2015 ES as previously with the 2012 model is that the most important factors in gas mileage, besides wind speed/direction, travel speed and exuberance on the throttle, are the air temperature and travel time (short trips with stop and go traffic really cut the mileage). Mileage is poor until the bike warms up. Riding high elevations in the western US doesn't seem to affect mileage much.

Another important factor is how mileage is measured. On my 2015 bike, the indicated mpg is usually about 3 mpg higher than the calculated number based on fill-up gallons and actual miles ridden. Occasional larger differences may be due to incorrect gas pump readings. (I try not to patronize those stations). Interestingly, the speedometer on my 2015 reads within 1 mph of the GPS speed (and the odometer is spot on). This is the first motorcycle I've owned where the speedo does not read 5 to 10% high. Thank you very much this time Yamaha!

As soon as I got the 2015 bike home, I realized that I wanted the ECU flashed (by AVC) as I had done with the 2012 in order to remove the low gear restrictions, reduce the compression braking and improve the throttle response. At first I only used (enhanced) T mode, but then started using the S mode. The gas mileage didn't change much so now I just leave it in S and enjoy the responsiveness. After 18,000 miles, my overall average mileage is just about 47 mpg (and increasing slowly during the hot weather). That's about 1 mpg less than I had averaged over 50K miles on the 2012 bike using T-mode most of the time. I figure the difference comes from twisting the throttle a bit harder.

TomZ, you and a I are close in riding. 5/23/2016, I traded my 2012 in with 52,200 miles. My 2015 ES has 17,000 miles.

I have not used S mode with the 2015 ES and have not flashed the ECU. Going to give S mode a try. I did not like it with my 2012. Throttle was too jerky.

Had a 2012 S10 and now have the Gen 2 2014. Don't notice any mileage difference between T Mode and S mode or SS Mode on the older bike. No SS Mode on the newer bike. Mostly run S Mode except in T for bumper to bumper Traffic Mode or T for Trail Mode. I ride briskly mostly in 6th gear at 4000ft and easily get 425 Kms per tankful some times 450kms. And thats with plenty of roosting on gravel roads. Do notice better gas mileage on the Gen 2 bike though. Believe thats about 60mpg Imperial or 50mpg American measured on quantity used on fill ups. First valve check on Gen 2 bike coming up. Wish me luck.

In the UK and Europe speed cameras are now everywhere, so touring two up and luggage, I get around 200 miles before it drops into the last fuel block. I use S mode when rideing in the Alps, it realy helps going up the tight hairpins and seems to give a bit more engine breaking on the way down.

Ride on, TC. That first valve check is coming up fast.

As mentioned, I had the ECU flash done right away. It makes a big difference even on the gen. 2 bikes and is probably the reason I'm using the S mode enhanced now.

I keep reading people getting their ECU flashed but never see any links to where it actually gets done. Does flashing your ECU make your YES warranty invalid? I would assume since you are changing the way the bike performs that it would.

Take a look in the Accessory & Mods tech section, that's where you will find the threads on reflashing.

I very rarely use S mode, in fact almost never. I've now done 18,500 miles on my 2014 (since May 2015) and the computer says I've averaged 58.3 mpg (UK). I got the bike with 200 miles on the clock, it was an ex demonstrator and at that time the average was 44.5 mpg.The average peaked at 60.1 mpg at the first service. It stayed around the 60 mark for the next 5,000 miles or so and then took a dip when I changed jobs and increased my daily mileage from 90 to 150. I've never reset the mpg and checked the last tank, it came out at 54.3 mpg. I'm doing 150 miles a day commuting on a mix of country lanes and dual carriageway. I don't hang about, but am not a 'fast' rider. Generally I'm doing between 65-80 mph depending on who's about. The bikes also been to Belgium, France and Spain. I tend to fill up with 97 RON whenever it's available, but am not precious about it.

Just so we're on the same page, 1 imperial gallon is equivalent to approximately 1.2 US gallons, so Tim's indicated 58.3 mpg (UK) compares to 48.6 mpg (US). However, at least on my 2015 ST, the indicated mpg reading is quite a bit higher than the calculated mpg (actual ridden divided by gallons used). My average indicated mpg (US) over 18K miles is 50.0, compared to 47.9 mpg calculated. Worse yet, my indicated mpg varies greatly between fill ups, with differences between indicated and calculated mpg scattering from 0 to +6 (and a couple of negatives). I wonder if others are getting erratic mpg readings from their gen. 2 Teneres.

Also, I have not found any significant differences in mpg (however it's measured) between fill ups with midgrade, premium with ethanol and ethanol-free premium.

You absolutely should notice an mpg drop when using ethanol laced fuel. Ethanol simply does not contain as much potential energy ad pure gas and burns off faster. Ethanol also evapirates faster than regular and that wastes the fuel faster as well. Ethanol does burn slightly hotter than regular gas so it does add a few extra horsepower though.

The problem with measuring mileage on a small, high rpm motorcycle engine is that it is so difficult to ride consistently enough to get steady results. Even slight changes in riding style, shift points, traffic patterns and terrain make a huge difference in your fuel consumption. Regular passenger cars do not see near as many different variables on a daily basis and are much easier to calculate fuel mileage with.
