Anyone had experience with Excel rims?

Hi all,

Last year unfortunately I got knocked off my S10 by an ambulance of all things :) It was low speed and the bike only suffered a minor bash, but the front rim ended up getting bent in the action.

I've trued the wheel back to something half reasonable, but ever since its given me vibrations under braking. Its got so annoying that I want to replace the rim, but the price of getting a stock rim is stupidly expensive, so I am thinking of purchasing an Excel rim of the same size.

These visually look like a more traditional wheel (without the spoke lip), but I'm not able to find much information of people using these rims on a S10.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts about them?

Cheers
Moho

Excel rims are good rims, but they are not tubeless. That is the reason for the lip(s) on the OEM one(s). Regardless, if you are getting vibrations under braking, it is way more likely that you have a bent disk, than a rim problem. Even if your rim is slightly out of true, you shouldn't feel any difference with or without using the brakes.

Thanks guys, all discs have been replaced. I'm pretty sure its the rim as its slightly buckled, braking just amplifies it. I used to get vibration just riding so I trued it a little which made it smooth under riding, its just under braking now.

First of all, did your insurance not replace the rim? Secondly, have a look at ebay, there's usually some on there, even from Europe would be cheaper than new stock rim. As you replaced the discs, is there a possibility the the hub is damaged / distorted in some way?

It was only a light crash, so no insurance was involved. It is possible that the hub is damaged, although when truing the wheel the hub and the discs look completely fine and have no run out which is why my thoughts are still with the rim. I can see the rim has a small amount of run out and is buckled (although very slightly).

I have looked on eBay, nothing unfortunately. They often go for a high price even second hand. Also the stock rim is cheaper to order from the States than get in Europe - prices are completely mad here.

I might try and conduct some sort of half scientific test on the hub/discs for run out - but they do look good.

A light crash that's gonna cost a thousand bux. The ambulance company should have been happy to cough up the replacement costs.

Well I was the one at fault really as I was filtering aggressively. Plus the money i'd pay extra in premiums for all my bikes would increase should I make a claim.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys. I will conduct some further testing before splashing out on a rim, although i'm pretty sure I'll have to get a new one in the end if I decide to keep the bike long term.

Before dumping gobs of cash on a new rim, why not pull the old one and take it to a shop so they can put it on a wheel stand and check the runout on the rim? If it's the hub, or the rim, then a runout gauge can tell where the problem is. If the rim is actually bent, then there are places on line that can repair a bent rim for a lot less than the cost of a new one.

Did you replace the disks with OEM? I ask because I tried some Chinese disks on my Hayabusa and they vibrated like a bitch under heavy braking. Put EBC disks on next and smooth as silk. If you did use OEM and did not change pads, you might want to give that a try before you spring for a rim.

Thanks guys, tyres are new Michelin Pilot Trail 5's, rotors are EBC Contours new at the beginning of the year. Pads are EBC Sintered HH.

I am going to check the brake disc bobbins, possible that crap as got in there as I do ride all weathers. Its definitely got worse over the last month or so.

@RCinNC Yep I have a truing stand so will do a few more in depth checks myself. I may also go on the hunt for a local wheel shop that can handle spoke rebuilds/rim repairs. Its not crazy bent, just a bit.
