Just wondering if anyone has static dropped their bike (eg, foot slips at a stop and down it goes), what type of production did you bike have at the time, and what was the damage.

Haven't static dropped yet, but almost went down on the move today. Drove over a wet manhole cover in a tunnel when turning at about 35km/h. Lost the front end briefly, but recovered. Timely reminder I said to myself.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for, I've done a number of slow speed drops/getoffs while tooling around on the trails and the only damage has been scrapes on the stock "sliders", hand guards, Altrider bash plate and my soft luggage. Pretty minor damage considering at one point it slid almost 5 ft downhill on gravel. That being said I'm going to chill it on my offroad adventures till I fit it with a crashbar.

I've not dropped mine but I have been close to it. I put my left foot down at a junction that I wasn't intending to stop at it had a diving camber into the gutter (Brits drive on the wrong side of the road) only just caught it. You soon find out how heavy the bike really is. It did me some mischief though .... hurt like a Hmmmmm. ::)

The ST1300 Owners forum had a natty little stat that recorded how many drops you'd had ... I kinda liked that.

I have to admit that I dropped mine last night on a parking lot...
Was on my bike for 7 hour, did roughly 400 miles - got to the hotel and slipped trying to get it on the center stand fully loaded.

The good part: There is only a tiny scratch on the alt rider bars and absolutely NO mark at all on the pannier. :-*

Sorry guys - but I was not in the mood of getting a picture of it lying on the bars/pannier....

I haven't dropped mine yet, but I'm scheduled for one probably next Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll let you know. R

Great idea !! That way, we can all get it done under highly controlled circumstances. Padding on the ground, padding on yourself, maybe a couple of leaky air mattresses to slow the fall. People around to help you stand the bike back up again. I like it. Then it's done, and we can all move on.
Next will be to plan the "non-static" layover. That will take a bit more preparation. R

Ok, If you have dropped it already do you have to also do the scheduled drop  :))

I did a bone head move when removing my bike from the lift, I forgot I had the side stand down and when the rear tire came off the ramp the side stand hit the lift forcing the bike away from me very quick. I could not stop it in time before my mirror snaped off on the work bench and the end of the bar and brush guard saved me. I guess I am glad the work bench was in place because other wise I would have ended up on top of the big XT on the shop floor trying to save it :-[

I know about this rule very well but it happened anyway. I was just glad that was all that happened. I thought to myself, well I got that out of the way now. :)

I was able to repair the mirror shaft with my welder and I now have a new one on order to replace my dirt dobber mirror threaded shaft. ???

I don't know if I didn't get the kickstand over center, or if I still had forward motion, or what... I do know my mind was engaged with something else when the motorcycle kickstand went "zonk" and the bike kept going over.

The good news... after summoning everything I had, I was able to kick the thing off my boots. Good news that I was wearing Combat Touring Lites... Good news that the only injury to a naked ST was the kickstand extension broke off (where the spring is attached - personally, I use the end of the kickstand to extend/retract so I'm not replacing it) and the handguards rotated. Except for the kickstand tab, you can not find a scratch on the bike. I was so impressed with the ST for not showing signs of my incredibly stupid, boo-boo.

The bad news... this bike is a bitch to pick up. For reasons that will become obvious in the next picture, I was limited in where I could place my feet in order to not to further damage to other vehicles in the garage. I called a friend (whose first response was "damn Yamaha kickstands...) and we got it up. My S10 had no crash bars and no bags.... so getting the tires to touch was easy... hefting it skyward after that required a lot of heft. I have never picked up my GSA but I'm pretty sure I could get a good angle on it with the cylinders and crashbars before I had to lift it up.

The other bad news...

The bike was unscathed... but I now have my first automotive claim in over 36 years of driving. Damn it. That was a $1200 dent.

So... may you be more careful and more lucky in your endeavours.

Love the bike.

Did almost the same thing on a fully loaded ST1300 in a tight space in a friends garage in NH years ago. Lesson learned: always retract side stand before rolling a bike off the center stand.

And get on it when you come off the center stand. I pushed mine off the other day while standing beside it and ALMOST lost it. Bad move. I won't do that again. R

I'm in a race right now. Will the crash bars get here and get installed, before I drop this bike in my garage?

At least I'm not the only one whose garage has a gravity well that pulls bikes onto their sides.
