(Didn't want to start another thread for another question)

I was about to change my oil but I have a mcct coming in next week (hopefully). I know I need to take off the right side engine cover. I'm not familiar with dry sump engines and have not seen this addressed in any of the threads.
My question is do I have to drain the oil or will it stay in engine with the side cover off?
Sorry if this is beyond elementary.....

No need to drain the oil to remove the RH cover. I did the clutch basket swap full of oil and ready to go.

Good luck!

Unless the CCT needs to be replaced urgently (excessive rattling noise) why not replace it during the next oil change? Might be less messy.

I'm fixing to be a grandpa and my daughter lives 200 miles away. I have 5,000 miles on this oil. It is synthetic oil.
How do you feel about putting that many miles on the oil?

As the oil change is about due anyway, do it all at once. The oil is does not take a beating that some people (at least my experience with the folks in the US) seem to think, in EU the recommended oil change is 6k miles. I hope the MCCT swap goes well, please report back on your view once done, I have a new '14 version CCT to swap out, but may opt for a MCCT....

Re: Quick question about changing the cam chain tensioner

I change my oil (semi synthetic) every 5000 km (3000 miles), though the manual points out that the oil should be changed every 10000 km (6000 miles). I suppose it's time you changed the oil, though if you're really pressed for time, another 400 miles on the oil shouldn't do any harm, especially since you are using synthetic oil (it lasts somewhat more than semi-synthetic).

Congrats on 'fixing' to become a grandpa.

Although I would bet the oil is fine (agree with Dogdaze), with that big event coming up soon, why not get it done now. One less thing to worry about, and peace of mind.

Grandpa first, everything else can just wait in line. The oil is fine, provided you have not abused it.

Enjoy the role of Grand Father, your first time will never happen again.

Congrats!

Has anyone heard of or know anyone that has had a broken cam chain due to a manual cam chain tensioner?
I just talked to the Yamaha service adviser in Houston and he said that's what his tech said. I haven't read it anywhere.

Have not heard of any on the Super Tenere. Definitely heard of it in dirt bikes.

I'm going to disagree with the service "adviser". I would almost challenge him to break a cam chain with a manual tensioner. First off you would have to tighten the living hell out of it and it would run very sluggish and the tensioner rubbing block would wear out quick. He may have seen some broke chains, but I don't think a manual tensioner was the problem.

Thanks guys. I'm heading back to Shreveport from Houston today. I'll try it myself but if I run into any problems, I'll let Jaxon fix it. He's going to give it the 24,000 mile check.

I just did mine and was super simple, taking of the clutch cover no oil come off at all, and the gasket was perfect and can be reused, all was done in less than a hour
