About an 1/2 hour after this photo, the top case snapped off the mounting and jumped onto the pillion, at speed. My original install retained the plastic "rack" which, upon inspection, is little more than decoration.
After removing the shards, I discovered that holes in the mount bracket line up perfectly with the yamaha factory bracket so i made some spacers and bolted it in, 5 minutes job.
What else am i missing (since I should never have mounted the case to the decorative bracket) ?

I bolted my top case with 3 long bolts through the thin plastic rack and the sub-carrier into the frame, and one shorter bolt to the sub-carrier, and it's rock solid, but it only works if you use spacers to remove any flex between the two plastic parts. And when I say rock-solid, I mean up and down Ophir, Engineer, and Cinnamon with a loaded top case.

Thanks, glad to hear that. It does indeed seem infinitely sturdier. I don't know how I originally did what I did there. I consider myself fortunate not to have completely lost the trunk much less turning around to collect the damaged remains.

Sorry to say it TKAD but you're not the first to have a top case fail when just bolted to that little piece of plastic. There's just not enough footprint to keep from fatiguing the plastic to death.

One of the few places they attempted weight saving, apparently.
