S.L.A.P. A. H.O. First saw this acronym waaaay back when. Before Google. Took me a while to find out what it meant. Never understood not wearing a helmet. Initially, my parents told me I needed to. After taking the first grasshopper to the chest, never even considered not wearing a helmet.

Back in 2009 I got to to on a trip to Montana. On the way back was the Sturgis rally so we went to go see. South Dakota does not have a helmet law so everyone was flying down the highway at 80 MPH with nothing on. We all stopped to get fuel outside Sturgis and the Los Angeles chapter of the Hell's Angels pulls up next to us. Every single one was wearing a full face helmet. I wonder to this day was it to be safe or to hide the face???

On your way to everywhere, , Iowa
Iowa doesn't have a helmet law and I sometimes ride up to the station without [.5 mile]
I know very well the importance of a helmet.
I have raced Motocross from 1972 and have probable crashed more than 90% of all the members on this site combined.
You just can not let your head hit the ground unprotected.
I see HD riders around here all the time riding headless, This is the hart of White Tail country. They are all along the side of the roads dead.
I even seen an Adventure bike guy without a helmet 2 days ago. That just doesn't look right.

They saaaay, that helmets are only useful/designed for slow speed; in town. That if you crash at, or above, legal highway speeds, it will be "other" injuries that kill you. That being said, you won't find me without a helmet; regardless of speed. After riding for this long, it feels way too weird not wearing one. And, I still refer back to bug impacts; they're gross, and painful.

The helmet argument always centers around impacts, and it's true that there's only so much that an inch of styrofaom and a fiberglass shell can do for you in an impact; no helmet on earth will save you if you go head first into a tree at 70 mph. One thing that helmets do really well, at every speed, is to protect your head and face when you're sliding on it down the asphalt after a get-off. I've seen some really scarred up helmets and visors from a rider sliding on his head down the highway; they would have had some pretty horrific facial injuries without that full face helmet on, even in a relatively low speed crash.

Texas has a helmet law, but not enforced , at least not that one can see. you have to carry 'X" amount of insurance and post a sticker on your bike , but damn if I've ever seen one. but the 1%clubs all wear helmets i'm thinking so the man don't hassle them with helmet law. the wannabe pirates are the riders with out helmets....

Knew a guy that crashed when a Junebug hit him in the face! He had a helmet on but was a open faced with no shield.

I’ve only ever seen a June bug a couple of times in my life. Pretty rare around here. Wouldn’t want to hit one on a bike that’s for sure. I hit a red wing blackbird center chest. Knocked the wind out of me.

I was hit on the knuckles by a junebug once. I felt like I had been hit with a hammer. I don't even want to think about taking one to the head.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid. You're supposed to have an insurance card that specifically states that your medical care will be covered in the event of a crash without a helmet. Generally, ANY health insurance card will do. BUT, they did away with the sticker requirement close to ten years ago. Almost forgot, you must be 21 years old to NOT wear a helmet. (in Texas, of course)

The Hurt report that found most motorcycle accidents happened at ~30 MPH or less, and most often close to home. Those short neighborhood trips to the store without ATGATT are arguably the most deadly.

I think that's where I read it. It was so long ago, (yup, '81) I couldn't remember where.

All my injury crashes ending up in hospital stays happened close to home or the Naval base. And they were well in excess of 30mph. The one that happened during a desert race was less than 30mph but over 100 miles from home. Go figure....

Last big crash had me going over the bars and doing a rag doll across the desert. I was doing over 50mph and the front end washed out with no warning My fault for not running knobby's. I actually went to work the next day and limped around for over a month. I was so happy to be wearing a helmet. Had a few big chunks out of it and a broken visor from bouncing off rocks.

Yes, all the gear all the time is what I live by. But even then it sure does hurt!!!
