YAMAHA XT1200 SUPER TENERE (NEW THROTTLE-BY-WIRE MCCRUISE)

Any thoughts on the cruise control offering above?

I have a 2012 Super T and would like cruise control. Was thinking of buying a new bike, but maybe the above system would delay that purchase. Currently at 47,000 miles and counting. Great bike and no complaints to speak of save tires don't last long enough.

Thanks,
Martin

If it was me, I would opt for a mechanical unit like the Excel throttle lock or similar that wourk really well without having to invest in money, time and possible electrical gremlins creeping into the already sensitive system (low voltage issues). I know a couple of members have used the McCruise system and they will offer more pertinent views.

No personal experience, but when the Gen1 was still being sold we did have a number of members install cruise. I'd suggest searching through the forum for those old threads pertinent to the Tenere, and Googling in general for that brand on any bike.

I have installed the MCCruise unit on an MT-09 Tracer for my Mrs. Amazing piece of gear with quality parts and detailed instructions for installation. Expect to take most of a day to do it. Reasonably expensive tho..

My '13 S10 has a Kaoko throttle lock on it which was installed by the PO.
I have used it a few times and although it takes a bit of getting used to,
it is a very well thought out product.
BTW, I have never owned a bike with any form of cruise control before so I am
sure that a proper electronic cc is monumentally more functional and safer.

I installed a Rostra cruise control on my 2013 and it works really well. I purchased it online from Murphs Kits. Do a search on "rfulcher" and the search results will pull up my documentation of installation. The Rostra has been flawless and works really well. I also have a Kaoko throttle lock of the bike that is never used.

I installed the original MC Cruise on my 2012 S10 as soon as it came out. It was completely reliable for a few years. After the bike sat for a year in the course of a move, the relays in the vacuum actuator got gummed up from ethanol fumes. I replaced that with the newer electronic actuator and it has been bulletproof ever since. Even still, I'm occasionally tempted to upgrade to that new throttle-by-wire version which is an incredibly elegant solution. I probably won't since it is fine as is. I've never had any electronic glitches despite plenty of plenty of offroad and heavy rain use. And the guys at MC Cruise are awesome, super responsive and helpful whenever I've had questions.

I finished up the rostra cruise on my bike . Eric V did a lot of the work before I bought the bike from him. It works really good. It holds the speed better than my wifes 13 Honda CR-V.

McCruise has been around for a long time and made significant improvements over the years. I've got experience with an circa 2009 unit for a BMW F800GS and it worked well, except in rain, when it would fail. I believe that was related to the bike more than the McCruise, as there just wasn't weather protection for the electronics of the McCruise.

They are in Australia, but have excellent customer service and will even call you if need be.

For the forum readers - please remember that there is a big difference between a throttle lock and cruise control. Members seeking cruise control likely won't be satisfied with the momentary speed holding abilities of a throttle lock. I have used both and like many facets of a good throttle lock, but a good cruise control like the OEM Yamaha one works so well that I have not found the need to add a throttle lock to the bike for those times when I need the right hand for something else.

True cruise control allows the speed to be set and maintained regardless of hills. I even find myself using the CC for low speeds at times when going thru a long town with a low speed limit like 30. I can set the CC at 30 actual, 31 indicated, and not worry about Mr uptight LEO that is watching for minor speeders.
