Took the bike to local dealer for 600 mile service. Looked at the bill and I was charged for 5 qts of oil. This raised a red flag, as we know the bike holds 3.59 qts with oil filter. So I asked the question we would all ask, why? The service manager asked the tech what was the deal and why so much oil. He said it is a dry sump motor and was comp drained, added 4qts ran the bike and it looked like it was still low so he added another ½ qt, and this put the oil at the right level. I said no shit. The book still says with oil filter it holds 3.59qts so what are you doing to get out extra oil. This went unanswered and I paid the bill and headed out the door. I went straight home to research this issue. Site glass is full as it has been since I bought it. So not sure how much oil was in it, I should have changed it myself and measured it. And if that wasn’t enough the oil filter was leaking and oil was all over my new bike, not happy. Long story short the service manager handled this issue very well, offered and gave me back every dime I paid for the service (250.00, used full synthetic oil) and offered to completely redo it for free. I passed on the free service and did it myself, as I will do for now on. But my question is what trained tech ignors the book and just adds oil as he feels he should. ::010::

I sympathize with you. This sounds like the first service I paid for on the Tiger. I rode away with a quart too much oil, and a few other things as well.

Oil is so easy, just do it yourself and it'll be done right. Save your coin for the things you can't do easily and have no choice on.

A TRAINED tech would not have. That's the difference.

Not much excuse for that. It's your basic "give a shit" attitude that is so prevalent these days. The only positive outcome you can hope for is that it was a learning experience for both the Service Manager and the tech. I dunno. R

As a rule I would never take my bike to the dealer for an oil change, but this is the first service and thought it would be best to have it done at a dealer. As many have said on this forum they would do, and then do everything yourself. When someone does a valve check I hope they video it, I would pay to see it done. PS getting to the air filter is a pain in the ass the first time then no problem once you know how to do it. I checked the air box and cleaned out a little oil.

I NEVER< REPEAT NEVER have the dealer do my first service (or any service)............new bikes have so few problems/issues that it is a complete waste of time/money to drop my bike off for expensive/faulty service (disclaimer---some dealers are excellent).
The Tenere first service is basically an oil change (easy), final drive change (easy), and a general check over., $50.00 max and you are done.

thank you sir, some stores don't use the regular techs for first service they use their fitters and most are very good but just like in every workplace there are always one or two who wont last so don't paint every tech (or dealer) with the same brush, its not cheap sending techs to the manufacturers for training but we still do it to maintain our certification and have hundreds if not 1000s of happy customers....

sadly there are still that small group of those who if you gave them your last 100 bucs would ask "is that all" because they always expect the earth

So if you don't let Yamaha do your first service will your warranty be void?

Here in Canadaville, the first service was included in the PDP price of the bike. We are also really lucky here in Yukon to have a personal relationship with most of the boys and girls at the dealership. and the mechanic is a serious motorcycle enthusiast who owns a Super Tenere ::26::

I ask because I have to take mine in. The dealer guesstimated $220. They say it's a first for them. I'm OK with the price but after that I will be doing everything myself.

list price was $2500 more than in the US. For that you get an immobilzer, a km only speedometer and a free O:) first service. do you have a problem with oil rich socialists :))

I did my own first service, but it sounds like the manager was going out of his way to make good on the sloppy techs work. Give the guy a break, he wants your business. ::003::

Why do you "have" to take it in? What will they do if you just do it yourself? I doubt they can make that condition legally. If you don't have another dealer nearby, you may do it just to maintain some harmony I suppose, but it sure feels to me like they are manipulating you. No mention of this was made to me when I got my bike, and I'd still have done it myself if they had said it.

I did give him a break. Yes he did go out of his way, so did the GM and he was very honest in every word he said. He does not baby sit the tech. I know shit happens, I was never angry and we parted on good terms. All I asked for was the labor back and one qt of oil, I was charged for 5 and only should have bought 4. I felt the Labor cost of $135.00 was not out of line based on all the things they were going to check. If my bike needs warr work this is where I will go because I know this srvice manager will make damn sure its done right. I posted this to make sure I read the book right 3.59qts right ::012::

I change my own oil, plus anything else I think I can do. This bike is not just pour it in and check the window. Very easy to put to much oil even after you know the 3.59 qts is there. If you run the bike several times and recheck it will show correct on the site glass.

I don't like the hurry up and gotta get this done and with air tools on my bike by most mechanics. I don't have air tools and have all the time in the world to get it done. Look up torque settings set them for each procedure, I like doing it myself.

I agree for most everything except the oil drain plug. I've always just "snugged it up" on all my vehicles and I've never had a leakage problem or a problem getting them back out. I've heard stories of guys who tried to torque the plugs to spec using a wrench and ended up with issues. Some of the Tiger1050 guys even cracked their sumps.

Same here for a LOT of years and a LOT of drain plugs/vehicles. Never had an issue.
