Good one Simon. Persistence paid off. Now question is if I should approach my dealer or not with my 5th gear whine on my 2010 XT1200A First Edition...

I think you are correct to say that my only problem was the audible noise, i couldn't even tell you with certainty that i expected any mechanical failure further down the line, i'm just a bit of a perfectionist and have an expectation from working with Japanese car makers that 'every one is EXACTLY the same' - it's my experience of the results they get from the mindset they apply during development.
Simon, Just curious who your dealer is. I bought my bike from Groombridges in Sussex ( I am in Seaford E Sx), they have been good to deal with. No probs with my bike at present (but going to give it a ride and listen for noises as mine may be close to yours in serial numbers)

I undertand completely....and if they get rid of the noise under warranty, why not? ::008::

I was on a weekend ride and really noticed the same whine. I have always heard it and it hasn't seemed to really change since new. Only about 1K on the bike so far. For me, it starts in 5th as I am accelerating and then is constant in 6th. Always the same, doesn't vary and goes away when i let off the throttle or hit the clutch. Sounds like the same as everyone else is experiencing.

Any new information out there since these last posts? I am trying not to worry, but...............

I'm coming off 15 years and a 110,000 miles on a Royal Star. Most of y'all don't know gear whine. However, I know some of you from a previous life, some of you do know whine.

Now that right there is funny!! And, if you add some wine the whine sometimes gets worse, sometimes better!

Anyone else's 5th gear make a completely different noise?

almost a ringing/ whiney noise? The same is present in 6th but much quieter. But not 4th.

I'm still fairly new to the bike and it's my first shaft driven bike too. But odd that 5th gear makes a distinct noise.

Anyone else?

Should I just ride more and worry less?

How many miles on the bike ? Gears tend to quiet down after a few thousand miles ::021::

you tend to get a lot of whine & cluncking noises from a shaft drive bike ..just ignore it .

Change the Final Drive fluid... simple, inexpensive and it is part of regular service.

Tires? Tire pressures? Some tires will sing. I noticed a big noise difference with the K60's. Now have the quiet Annakee 3's. Used to have the screaming T63's on my KLR. Good tire but LOUD.

It's def 5th gear related though. You can sit at the same speed in 4th and there's no noise. Click it up to fifth and there's the whining. Very odd.

If it is under warranty... call or take it to the dealer
