really? same sort of symptoms? - thats a couple of people have agreed.

Anyway - its in for a service on friday - i booked it in today - its due in July, but i'm off for a european tour to the alps on the 18th July, so i'll get it done now and looked at.

I'm getting some new tyres at the same time - just need to decide between "road 4's" and "anakee 3's" - but thats another thread.

Amen on the Michelin Anakee 3... Stay away!!! ???

The front wears out long before the rear, and the rear's traction over on the edge is sketchy.

Just FYI..

How about trying the same rpm in different gears rather than the same speed.

I use the Amzoil full synthetic rear end oil and run Shinko 705's on it. don't seem to have any extra noise. Maybe I am just used to it... I know that some of the tires will whine when they are new.

I had this issue on my bike, a UK first edition model. Yamaha authorised a warranty repair which fixed it. Had no issue since. The gear that they replaced had no visible signs of an actual failure, pm me if you want more details of my case to raise with your dealer.

Interesting thread and a few bikes revealing the "whine". Mines a 2012 but registered in 2013. I'll,see what the dealer says. I'm not too fussed about. Seems like a few have it and the only thing wrong is the noise. With a euro-trip coming up I think I'd take my chances with the whine rather than have my Bike at the dealers in pieces!

Yep fifth gear only and only about 30% of the time. A lot more whirring whistling and clattering going on with this bike compared to my previous ride (2003 Wing), But the more I twist the throttle the better it sounds.

PS. Also using Amsoil

There is sort of a 'yeah mine' thread in this forum somewhere, but it's really old. I don't remember the forum member name, but the his dealer agreed there was a whine and took care of it. In this case, it had something to do with the topography of the gear surface on an almost microscopic level. Absolutely no effect on reliability, but the whine bothered the rider.

This didn't work out too well really. My dealer test ride it when it was in for service and tyres (I went for pilot road 4's btw) and acknowledged that it whined but didn't think it represented a problem.

I'm not sure what to do now. I'm not really bothered if there isn't an impact to reliability. If it's some design of the cog that makes it whine in normal operation then I can live with it. Has anyone got a whiny 5th and done a lot of miles on it? Any actual issues (other than the noise) to report?

I'm terribly sorry to resurrect this old thread, but... I'm a happy owner of 2011 1st ed s10 whining when on 5th gear, and I've just found it googling. Exactly my case - I'm hearing noticeable whine at about 77-85 kph, then it goes away when accelerating beyond this speed. No other gear does that even when working on it's lower speed treshold.

Did anyone of whine owners since 2011 make a conclusion whether it should be considered an issue or rather a peculiar Yamaha feature ? Has anyone ran into some serious issues with 5th gear since then ?

Thanks.

Well, I totally understand that it's a bit too late to acknowledge "I have this too", mine s10 has this at 30K miles. Did your whiny 5th gear story got a happy ending ? However, considering the number of people staing that this is normal in both threads...

Merged two old threads.

fwiw - I had whine at certain highway speeds in both my FJRs and first Tenere, which seemed to also get better or worse with various tires. Don't remember which gear at the moment.

Yamaha transmissions have proven to be pretty bullet-proof, so I've always just thought this to be just a harmonic of the gear set at a certain speed.
