after buying german cars and bikes.. lesson learned: stay away.. planned obsalesence and contrived design... one time among many my 650 broke doen on a loop at the FDR drive in NY with no shoulder... not fun... the japanese are among the few manufactures who still have integrity to make a real machine... the GS is all glam and propaganda...

Sold my 2014 ES exactly one year ago and bought a couple new Vespa's. In the past 15 years I've had a GS, a couple of Harley's, a sport bike and most recently a 2017 WR450F. I've sold them all and never regretted it - - - simply moved on to my next bike. That all changed with the Super Tenere. I found myself really wanting that bike again. It is the ONLY bike I have ever regretted selling. It is the best long distance tourer I've ever ridden (over my Road King and GS) , does amazing canyon carving up here in the Texas Hill country...AND I can take it off road!. So 48 hours ago I sent a gent up in Missouri a cashiers check and am now the proud owner of a 2016 (60th Anniversary Edition)! I'm glad to be back.

I am in the process of returning to an ADV bike after owning a KTM 990. Rode (on road) both a ST and GS and I am leaning towards the ST mainly due to reliability and cost of maintenance. My question to you is, do you see big differences between the GS and ST in the dirt? Not a hard core off rider myself, but I enjoy dirt riding a lot. Some context, I have to ride at least 150 miles to get nice dirt.

To be fair, my GS was a 2002 1150 GS - heavier than the modern post 2005 GS's. While it's certainly no WR450F, I did take my 2014 ES all over forrest roads in Southern and Northern New Mexico and Big Bend. It is a heavy bike, but I always felt if kept her pointed in the right direction and upright I could ride that thing out of anywhere.

BTW, I had the chance to buy a really nice 2013 loaded GS for $9000 w/ less than 13K miles and only 200 miles away. I instead chose to pay more for the used Super Tenere and it's 1000 miles away. Why? As you stated, rock solid reliability and fairly inexpensive to maintain. No brainer for me.

The biggest thing for me is purely the cost, to swap my 2016 S10 to a 1250GSA I'd have to pay £10k sterling, that pays for a lot of fuel for my S10 or trips abroad!
exactly, cost is the main factor not the reliability etc as some trying to cheat themselves.
If price were the same many would get GS no question asked, be honest at least to yourself...

Of course the cost is an important part, if it were not, we would all have a Bugatti Chiron to go to the market
I play the cards in my country....

but, until now I have not had problems, I just go and come. my friends with a 1200lc, broke water pump, waiting 2 months for the spare. my other friend, with an 1190, accelerates alone to 2000rpm, and then goes down ... since last year and still can not solve it. That's not for me. of those who run cross, the ktm 450 is very good, but the pistons and rings of the yz450 get them original even in the Walmart .... each one is complicated or not, it is each one's decision, I love the 1250 , I love the 1290, I love the AT, I love the S10 .... I had to choose one, I did not want to complicate, like my toyota truck, or the suv toyota of my wife:):)

Myself, nope and nope for numerous reasons. Although I agree with your second statement, many if not most would.

Additionally if price was the same, the few advantages the BMW does have would be long gone. No free lunch.

I just traded my 2015 in on a 2019 because, well why not ..
You say why not - I have to ask why?
Unless you had +100.000 miles on the 2015, it seems to me that you just spend money on getting what you already got

I'm sure cost is the main factor for some people, but it would surprise me, if it's a majority.
To me price wasn't a factor at all, when I purchased my S10 back in 2015 - it was simply the bike that I wanted the most at the time.
Most of my friends is pretty well off, and none of them who are into this style of bikes currently ride a GS - a handful rides S10 like me, some KTM 1190's, one a new AT and one a Multistrada Pikes Peak.
The GS just doesn't appeal to everyone - for various reasons that have nothing to do with cost.

I'm in pretty much the same boat. Coulda had a BMW, enjoy occasionally renting or borrowing them, but have zero desire to own one. Glad they exist for those who do want one.

Side note - Be careful with the personal comments. The pruning shears just came out for those in a different thread.

Nothing against them, I kinda like the sound they make when you start them. I could have afforded any bike, wife kept egging me on to a GS. But I hate the idea of the service costs, plus the possibility the bike could spend serious time in a service bay, possibly when I'd rather be riding. I don't need a status symbol, and I do not ride a ton of miles anyway. A bike is a toy, a very usable toy, but hey, I got by for years with just a car. So I am having fun buying farkles for my S10. Realistically, it is just as good a bike. Better, if you count reliability.
