2017 Super Tenere - Canada in KPH cannot change to MPH

I have a 2017 Super Tenere ES in Canada. Just had a trip into the USA and wanted to change the display to MPH and to my surprise, there is no option in the Units setup to switch to MPH. In talking to a local Yamaha dealership, they were surprised and the Yamaha technician suggested buying a US dash which has the capability to switch between MPH and KPH.

Couple questions:
- is there a way to switch?
- is there a software update available?
- does the US dash actually switch between MPH and KPH ..

Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

I vaguely remember seeing the option on my '15 dash, but can't say I ever actually used it. Will check it when I get a chance.

My '12 will change to kph. A friends Canadian '12 will not change to mph. It's a strange way for Yamaha of Canada to order bikes, but they didn't want mph to be available.

So at this point the Yamaha technician may be correct in that the only way to change would be a different dash module.... it is really strange. Also shows just how much the Sales people do not know.... I remember specifically asking the question back when I purchased the bike in 2017.

I haven't changed mine, but the instructions to do so are in the Owners Manual on 4-15
Briefly they are; Select "Unit" from the menu. Select KM or Mile the push "Menu" again.

Whats interesting is the Manual talks about changing KPH to MPH and says see page 4-16 but there is nothing on that page regarding the Miles or KM... on page 4-19 the Canadian manual shows the UNIT setup but it is only to switch between km/l and l/100km no mention of MPH.... On the american manual it gives the option to change between Miles and Km..... So I think I am hooped... I will have to rely on a Garmin device when in the USA for my speed.... ugh..

Just checked mine and it's the same as yours, no option for miles.

Personally, I use a Garmin for speed reference in both Canada and the US. It's nice knowing my exact speed as no bike speedo is accurate, though the Tenere is closer than most.

Other tread clarify, that is is not possible to change in Canadien bikes..
Also this tread clarify, that it must be a Canadien request to Yamaha.

Canadian bikes won't switch to mph. They also won't change from l/100km to km/l ,even though it shows up on the display you can't select it.
I actually bought a complete instrument cluster in USA just to get the switching feature but it still wouldn't switch units at all. From this I conclude the switching logic is in the ECU, and that can't be changed due to the ignition immobilizer on Canadian only bikes.

It would be very expensive to change everything to make it capable, if possible. A simple GPS showing the MPH in front of you is a cheap easy fix (which you might already have anyway).

Thanks for all the input. It definitely sounds like a GPS solution . I did use the GPS on my last trip to the states to get the speed (as well as my sons bike, he would give the speed especially when in towns). I would love to know why Canada Yamaha decided to not allow the change to miles for Canadian bikes when our neighbour is in Miles. I am going to look at a larger GPS unit though that is easier to read. I currently have the Zumo 350LM (6 years old).

I really don't think it is Yamaha Canada that decide this.
It must be the Canadien government, that demands this to Yamaha.

For some reason, the mods "merge threads" has disappeared. Expect this and the other threads like it to merge soon. This has been discussed back to 2011.
