In the past 2 weeks Ive owned the bike, I have turned the heated grips on 4 times now by accident. (Think someone did it to me once)
Id like to remove the head unit, for the majority the year and just put it back on in the winter.

Has anyone ran the wires on these. Is their a quick disconnect on the wires coming from the control box somewhere down the line? I checked as far as I could get before taking the panels off the bike. Just wanted to see if I need to make my own/just remove the fuse or if I need to take the bike apart to find the factory one.

This is the head unit i have on a 2013 (picture stolen from google)

I had the same issue with my ‘13 when I first picked it up last June.
I simply ran a thin piece of gaffers tape across the dial to stop it from accidentally rotating clockwise.

As I understand, the Gen I heated grips should only work with the ignition on. Are you saying they have been turned on with the key off and work while the key is off?

The main connection is under the right side panel with the quick release Allen bolts. It's tucked in there as a white four wire connector. The color codes of the wires from the bike side are blue/black (key switch 12v), Black/green (headlight relay 12v), Black (ground) and Light green/white (ECU).

Some people have mounted the control in a different spot. That may be enough to solve your issue of accidentally turning it on. It would appear that the wires from the controller are what plug into that 4 pin plug under the right side panel.

You could probably just un-plug the connection under the right side panel. Then plug it in come winter. Or you could get used to looking at it now and then to make sure it's off. ;)

Yes it only works with the ignition on. But the problem is through gloves I don't notice till 20 mins into the ride its on (low) then it takes another 20 to cool down. Sucks when its already 100 out today.....

Thank you much for the picture. Ill find it now! Figured there had to be one just couldn't find it before taking the panels off. I really don't like the looks of the box anyway, and to be honest when my coldest day of the year is 50F.... Not sure I really need it anyhow, heck in the winter I switch to long vented summer gloves and that's good enough.

It's nice to have when you travel on the bike or commute in cooler areas. I don't use mine that much, but on a cool, but rainy day, it's nice to pop them on and resist the chill a bit better.

Personally, there is plenty of cable there, I'd just relocate the switch to somewhere out of the way, that you can still reach. It's not hurting anything to have it, just getting bumped.
