Hey everyone,

Last year i had my tenere stolen, it came back to me with a grinded off key cylinder. The bike can be turned on with a screw driver but wont start because the transponder reader for the key is smashed. Im wondering as a cheap fix for the time being can i somehow run alligator clips from the wiring that leads up to the key immobilizer around the stock key back to create a loop. is there anyway i can make a jerry rigged system so that the ecu can detect the old key even though the key cylinder has been damaged.

How do you know that the transponder is damaged? You should firstly delete the error code (for trying to start without the code) and then try the red key (if you have one)
if someone tried to start it, without the key with the correct code, or without code, the ecu closes and an error code appears in the dash

whoever tryed to steal the bike took a grinder and screw driver and smashed out the key cylinder. on top of the key cylinder is the black plastic ring that sits on top of the cylinder which reads the microchip off the key. that key chip reader that sends info back to the ecu was broken.

From what I've read previously the immobiliser is very effective. It can't be bypassed, otherwise thieves would do just that. Sorry but I think you're going to have to spend some money on this one to get it running again. As dannyv says, you could get a USA ECU, but they can only display mph. There is no ability to switch over to kmh.

I dont THINK the plastic ring at the top of the barrel reads the key does it?? I might be wrong though. Sounds like you'll need a replacement barrel/immobiliser/ECU to me

PS. You might also be able to get someone to make an imobiliser emulator for you like the track bike riders use

Hello Daniel. I am sorry for the problems you are having. I hate thieve's. Not sure if this will help you because i don't know anything about the key immobilizer system or what it would take to put a US version on your bike but i have a 2012 and it will read mph and kmh. If you run across the parts cheap off a crashed bike it may be worth a try.

I have a USA bike (2012) and it is easily switchable between kmh and mph.

Hi to all!
will a 2013 Gen 1 be capable to switch between KMH and MPH ? how is that done?
The inmobilizer is a very sofisticated system and be sure can not be by-pass easyly, the suggestion of looking for parte from a damage bike will be a posiblitiy and more economical!
Please let us know your evolution to solve your problem, my best wishes to get it back running.

Have a nice day!

For the US bikes it's a sequence of button pushes. If you go after another feature wrong, clock setting maybe? you can accidentally make the switch. Been several years, don't recall the correct sequence. I could prolly go out and accidentally do it. I do not know if Gen II can do it. UK bikes can switch? Cool. I wonder if bikes sold in other places can do it. Mexico? South America? Australia? Naw, no borders in Australia. The UK is only the second one I've heard of. My last run into Canada I just let the Garmin do it's auto correct. I thought that was neat, cross the border and presto, KPH.
In the automotive world the ecm can be reflashed to learn the new security stuff. I keep hearing that on a motorcycle it's a complete matched set of parts to do it right. Maybe we'll learn something new here.
