So I’m still in the market for a Tenere, not a great choice out there especially as I prefer to buy private but trying to work out is it worth hanging on for a 2nd generation bike?

The bike will be used for days out and the odd weekend trip, only doing about 2000+ miles a year, no off-road adventures, tarmac all the way! and this will be the bike that hopefully I’ll be keeping for a long time.

So my question is..Is It worth holding out for the a 2nd gen bike? Would the improvements be that noticeable In the ways I would use it? As it stands it’s roughly £1000 more for a 2nd gen Standard bike (no luggage etc) from a dealer against a 1st gen from a private buyer with all the kit and extras included, shall I just wait for the right gen 2 to turn up?

Thanks in advance

I own a Gen1 bike. Personally, in your shoes I’d wait for a Gen2 ES, better dash set up, Cruise and the clutch and CCT upgrades make the bike smoother and less vibey. Not all Gen1 bikes suffered clutch chudder/ vibration, but many did. Mine was awful! The CCT wasn’t a major issue, but the upgraded part is a bonus.

I’m not suggesting the Gen1 is in anyway a bad bike.........but I believe the Gen2 is an improved version.

Do we know what percentage of gen 1 bikes has issues with “clutch shudder/vibration” ? is it fairly obvious to Spot these problems on a test ride?

No idea of the percentage, but it was a known issue. A number of owners, including me, changed the clutch basket to the Gen2 version, which resolved the issue. Easy, but expensive fix!

I got my bike with just over 3k miles on it, and test rode it before purchase. The vibration wasn’t noticeable then, but it crept in and worsened around 8-9k miles, becoming very noticeable and very noisy. It was ruining ownership for me, because it was constantly there, but bad around 3-4K revs. Slightly too high a gear and it was awful! All disappeared with the upgraded part.

If you test a Gen1 bike with more than 10k miles on it and it feels fine, it’s either been upgraded or wasn’t a bad one. Try riding it and changing up a bit to early, see how it feels.

1000 quid is worth the piece of mind. Cuz the CCT, dash and most importantly, cruise control can't be added on for less than that. You'd be 2nd guessing yourself every time you started the bike. Just my 2 cents.

What's a quid anyway?

I'm biased, but a well sorted Gen1 is the one to go for if the price is right. Easy and cheap to throw a Barnett clutch on, PowerJet fuel management, and upgrade to a manual CCT.

The reason for my short answer above in this thread, is because this question was asked and answered in his thread about Gen 1 and Gen 2 colors. . . . at about 2pm. . . . and then again at 3pm.

The following is just my opinion: if you are going to keep the bike until you run the wheels off. . . . yes. If you plan on just taking a trip or two, then re-selling it. . . . then probably not. The Gen II motor is more "refined/smoother". But, more importantly, it has factory cruise control. I never thought I would use it much. . . . I was wrong. I use it daily. I would further recommend an ES, but if funds are tight, getting an ES is not critical. But, if you can swing the ES, it would be worth it over the years. On this bike, mileage is not a real important factor. eemsreno has over 226K miles on his, and he's still riding it. Take your time on the search, there are good deals out there, but I wouldn't let color be a determining factor.
