    Shinko 705: A cautionary tale

This is a good reason to be involved in other online forums. I was able to get a tube in a small town in Canada when my buddy didn't have a spare by reaching out on ADVRider forum. They also have a huge section where people have "Tent space" which is a spot for traveling motorcycle riders to...

    Shinko 705: A cautionary tale

No dealer/shop in town has a 17" rear tire that would fit? Sorry that you had the troubles, sometimes it goes that way.

Stay away from this Air filter

I used three of those with no issues, but I suppose that's just my experience. No doubt you got a bad one, but plenty of people have used them without problems. OEM is the way to go if you want to be sure it fits, I guess!

Valve adjustment - more lessons learned

That's my video. If all the marks line up and you don't move the crank you should be good, but like I say in the video it's sort of a shortcut and sometimes shortcuts can cause issues. The manual has all the steps you need to get cam timing perfect, I highly suggest checking the steps in...

Weapons - What you have (NOT a political discussion)

I bought it used off a local gun forum, it was listed a long time with no interest because it didn't have the required local ten round magazines, so had to be sold "without mags." I can't recall what we paid for it, but it was a good deal. The seller disassembled the magazines and handed them...

Weapons - What you have (NOT a political discussion)

I forget what a good pistol this is. Rarely gets taken out, my wife got a Ruger SR9C after this and then fell in love with a Springfield EMP so it got shuffled to the back. Not a big market for these Spanish guns, but it has always been reliable.

Never seen one of these before HONDA CTX1300

I know that these bikes exist but rarely see them. Sort of like the Super Tenere.

Weapons - What you have (NOT a political discussion)

Thanks for reminding me again about the Star Firestar Plus that I have in the back of my gun safe! It's a good shooter, I bought it cheap for my wife because she wanted to try out a 9mm after shooting the snub nose 38 I got her. She eventually got a few other 9mm's and the Star just got abandoned.

Head replacement. Engine in or out?

Lots of automotive engines have through holes from the factory, that if you don't install the bolt with sealant it goes into an oil or coolant passage and you will get leakage. The just use sealant on the threads of the bolt. I would do something like that first, least intrusive.

    ***SOLD*** Oxford Heated Grips

The answer to the last one is also yes, had these on mine with Kaoko throttle lock with zero issues. Awesome grips.

    Valve adjust advise

Your math looks good. The valves get tighter over time, so going to the high end of the adjustment is what I'd probably do.

    Fork maintenance?

That's not really true, compressing forks doesn't cause seals to blow. Lots of dirt bike riders says the same thing and use those fork block deals when trailering them. Funny how the bike can come down off a 50 foot jump over doubles on the track all day long with no issue, but then people...

    1980 XS1100 Midnight Special

As @Sierra1 mentioned, I picked up a 1980 XS11000 Special a while back and got it going. While I don't have it anymore, I sold it to one of my good friends locally so I'm still involved in making sure it's well taken care of. Your Midnight Special is the same bike with some cosmetic upgrades...

Live Wire, yes, an electric Harley

I have heard the same thing happening to Honda riders on the DCT bikes, revving at a stop light doesn't work when you are always in gear!

    Madhatter wants a dirt bike….

I have three (sort of) dirt bikes in the garage, KTM 250SX, Honda XR350R and KTM 690. I have ridden the 250SX three times in the last two years and it's probably heading out soon, so I get it. Even though I don't use it much it's a lot of fun to ride. Not having a license plate on it was the...

Dealer says I don't need a valve check?

The difficulty of the valve clearance check/adjustment on the Super Tenere is overblown, in my opinion. It's not as easy as an air cooled BMW boxer or an old Honda XR but it's much easier than many other bikes. The cam chain tensioner is different than most, I hate it and installed a manual...

    Anyone hear of transmission issues?

True, I've been seeing some first gen models selling around the $5-6k range. Parting it out could make money, but I've done that a couple times and it's a long process with lots of parts lingering for ages.

    Anyone hear of transmission issues?

From looking at an eBay listing, it looks like the Tenere engine is split horizontally so it could be a "fairly" simple job to get into the transmission. Still a lot of work, but I imagine I could get it done in a day in the garage.

    Anyone hear of transmission issues?

Likely a bent fork causing it, yes. May have damaged a few gear dogs depending how long it has been operating like that. 80's model Yamaha street bikes used to have a lot of second gear issues, been inside a couple of them. They were split horizontally, so didn't have to disassemble the top...

    Anyone hear of transmission issues?

There's a 2013 Super Tenere for sale about 100 miles from me advertised that says "4th and 5th gears skip". Here's the cut/paste from the ad: 2013 Yamaha Super Tenere 1200cc. 65k miles Clean title New tires Continental TKC The bad, 4th and 5th gears skip. Rest works perfect. Pink slip...
