Final drive gasket?

As the pictures attached show, I have some rusting around the collar by the pumpkin. There was no gasket between the swing arm and the final drive. That’s where the water is coming from. I looked through the service manual, and there is no reference of a gasket. Should I be making a gasket to prevent water from coming in as a preventative maintenance measure?

No. Adding a gasket will cause miss alignment for the axle shaft. And it won’t prevent the rust you have because water enters through the drain hole and possibly past the rubber plug in the swing arm.
Would a thin gasket cause a notable misalignment of the axle shaft? I was hoping I could just plug the drain hole and add a gasket.

I wouldn’t do it, even if you get the axle installed the wheel will then be not aligned with the output gear. This could wear the drive splines or the rubber cush drive. The hole is there for a reason, to let water drain out of the swing arm.
Rust on that coupling is normal and not a problem.

Agree, also that space heats up when running and needs to be vented to atmosphere. If you seal it all up, I’m not sure what that trapped pressure might do?

Agree with all that has been said above already
I would just sand the rust away with fine grain paper (it is on the outside so no big deal) and just spray it with ACF-50 and you shall call it a day (for quite some time)
If you seal the hole you will still get water building up from condensation.... and it won't have a way to go elsewhere....

yes, I did sand the rust away as best as I could. I will have to look at the ACF- 50.

I'm currently in the FJR1300 world and it has a VERY similar arrangement.... and we see the same: surface rust on the shaft and other items. Not a concern and if you're in there every few years, just clean as needed and lube the splines and ensure the drain hole is clear... and NO gasket is 100% correct! The FJR swing-arm is open at the pivot/engine end so it can easily breath whereas the Super Ten has a rubber bellows type thing I believe due to it's obvious off-road intent.
