I keep a knob in the garage kit for doing this on future bikes. I got this one at a local farm supply store that has all the small bins of various repair parts like Ace does.

This style feels nice to the fingers and can be used with gloves on due to the shape. I also like the white line as a nice indicator of the key/lock being centered and the set screw. I typically shorten the key first, then grind or file the sides a little to jam fit into the hole with the set screw on the edge. Tighten the set screw and test fit until I'm happy, then fill the sides of the hole around the key with some JB Weld or epoxy. Never had one come loose.

The size of the flare still fits nicely inside the key recess and if done so it sits down, covers and protects the key hole far better than the ignition with a key in it. I've always had to lube my ignition switches with some dry graphite now and then since my key stays in so much of the time and long rides in less than idea weather. The gas cap key has never been an issue though. No signs of corrosion or gritty feeling.

Hope this helps is someone wants to do this themselves.

Where in Tupelo?
I got the knob at Scruggs over in the Barnes Crossing area. I think the Home Depot and Ace would have them too, but I was getting some other fasteners, so just picked up a knob while I was in that section of the store.

That's a nice offer, but any Ace or Farm Supply store probably carries them. Tractor Supply, Ace, Home Depot, etc.

I may wander up to AR in April, but don't have plans that far out right now. No Super Ten any more, but I'd enjoy meeting some of you IRL.

Any ACE hardware should have those.

ACE Hardware? What sort of a city do you think I live in?

Riding an '05 FZ6 right now and waiting on a Honda CT125. Going to play in the slow lane for a while and wander the back roads.

Well, I finally got around to installing it! Seems pretty decent for the price, may take a fine file and clean up the threads a bit, couple of tight spots screwing it in and out, otherwise it seems fairly well built! Could just be the paint is a touch too thick in spots too.
