IS ABS Module is a weak spot of this bike

I've just owned S10 for 3 months, my first service 600 mile I met another S10 Owner his bike is in service too, need to replace the ABS module, his was 2013 and only 12000m on ODO. He has to pay around 1800 USD for this ABS module, and just recently another bike from my local group; say that he has to change abs module, there was a brake fluid leaked under the rear fender. The dealer told him that is was leaked from the ABS module. I thought S10 was a bullet proof.

It's not a weak point on the S10, but like on any other bike, the ABS module can fail.

You can do some preventive measures.
1. Make sure that the location of the modul isn't flooded with water (keep the drain holes clear).
2. Change the brake fluids at regular intervals and make sure to flush the system properly.
3. Activate your ABS from time to time.

And remember our ABS pump is Bosch and made in Germany (probably only German part on the bike). I think Yamaha planned this to keep owners from switching to BMW. Imagine if all of your bike's parts were German. ouch! LOL

I just bypasted it, No linked brakes or ABS now. "But great brakes"

The bad, they already told you. "You have to change it" ... If it were the "abs ecu", there are probably no solutions, but a loss of fluid in the "abs pump”? .... I think it is worth observing, a seal? .. an o'ring? ... a punctured pipe? ... the abs pump, it's just an electric motor and a few valves .... I don't know, for $ 1800 ... I would start by looking where the loss is
What I mean is that, it is not the same a locked pump or with the electric engine burned, that a loss of fluid, I imagine that there must be some solution of the type "homemade eemsreno”

Owner since 2012 and this is the first I have heard of an issue with the ABS. My bike has only 23K miles but the only issue I have had is leaking fork seals which Yamaha replaced under warranty at 17K.

Mine went first year (2012) after a ride up to Deadhorse, like Don says make sure the drain holes aren’t plugged in the plastic it sits in. I actually opened up the holes and drilled an extra 2. The holes will plug with crap and then the unit will end up sitting in water.

70,000 miles and no ABS issues with my '15. I've changed the brake fluid but only once. I know the ABS module is a Bosch design, but I also know that Bosch licenses their designs to many manufacturers. Is the unit in our bikes really made in Germany by Bosch or a licensee like Nissin or some such?

Can anyone here provide a photo showing the actual location of the ABS pump? I'm not near my service manual at the moment, and the online parts diagrams aren't too clear. I've got a bunch of maintenance to do on the bike when I get back home, so I may as well add this to the list and check to make sure my pump isn't sitting in a pile of muck and the drain hole isn't clogged.

The price of these modules via the Yamaha food chain is plain crazy, but does serve to highlight the importance of regular maintenance as well as actually testing functionality of the ABS system frequently. Various companies offer a rebuild service, but this can just exaggerate the pain, if the unit is then found to be irreparable.

ABS is a weak point and source of trouble in any vehical equiped with it. I don't think the Tenere any different than the rest. I wish it was never invented, but we got it and will live with it best we can and hope it works each day is what I do. Safetycrats mandated these things unfortunately.

Point number 1 above sent me to my bike today to check the drains. One was completely blocked, and being on the side stand side, could potentially leave the pump sitting in water.

Here’s what I did, described left and right as sat on the bike. Gen 1 bike. 31k miles.

Removed riders seat, using a torch looked down the sides of the pump. The left side had a fair bit of dust and fine debris covering the bottom of the tray, so much so, that I couldn’t even see if there was a drain hole. There was however, no water present, nor any signs that water had sat there. Using a long reach flat ended screwdriver I moved the dirt about, which then exposed the drain hole, thus causing the debris to fall through the hole. A couple of minutes later the bottom of the tray has been almost totally cleared. If you have a air suction device this will be a 30 second job, however, access is through a narrow gap.

The right hand side I access from under the tray, and using a small zip tie, poked around through the clearly visible drain hole until clear. I didn’t remove the tray so couldn’t see the shape of the tray bottom, but I suspect water and debris gets in and settles on the left hand side, due to far more frequent side stand use.

If any of you guys are familiar with Duct seal or "monkey crud", thats what I used to cover the holes that I made larger. yes I had issues with mine, yes it frustrated me to no end. Was it self induced? Maybe.......I onely ride slab to get to the dirt. Then the fun begins, it is an off road bike, mud, creek crossings bouncing off trees.......yes to all.


I had an issue with mine holding water as the tiny little weep holes were filled with dust. Now I have a 1/4 inch hole up front and about 1/2 in the back. I keep the rear ( 1/2 back right) covered with monkey crud, I can pull it off and drain (if needed) all while my seat it on. I carry some extra in my tool kit. Takes 2 to 3 mins and I did it twice on my last trip.........
