My helmet lock

Just thought I’d share my idea for securing my helmet if I have to leave the bike. A u-lock through the chin bar is infinitely preferable to a d-ring lock. Actually, my helmet doesn’t have a d-ring even if I wanted to use it. It hangs on the bike pretty unobtrusively when not in use. 1567101907381.jpeg

I like that idea. But....no D-ring....please elaborate.
Schuberth helmets use a ratchet strap closure on the chin strap, not traditional double D rings.

Hmmmm....those aren't called D-rings? I will concede they're not "old" D-rings, but I'm still seeing "D"s.
The D rings pic is a stock pic, not what he has on his helmet, (Schuberth C4). With the ratchet strap, you can go thru a loop in the webbing, but it doesn't make people feel as secure as thru the D's, (and is a little more fuss to do). Never mind a sharp knife will defeat both. The U lock and Cable locks shown would require a sawsall and leave you with an even more useless helmet. Not great if it rains on your helmet while you're having lunch, but at least you'll still have a helmet.

I haven't been locking the helmet much over the last couple of years. It was dirty, bug covered and getting stanky and ratty inside. Just installed comm in the new Vortex Carbon today. Guess I'll be locking that up! At least for a while. Carbon is too sexy and I don't want to buy it again.

Lost a brand new and very expensive Simpson helmet to a thief when those helmets were the big new thing. The thief simply cut the strap at the D-rings and would have had a new pair of rings sewn on.

I'm a cable lock guy too. I carry two of them in my top case. They're good for a ton of stuff. I can lock my panniers to the bike with them, lock my helmet (through the opening for the face) and jacket to the bike, or even lock the bike to a stationary object. I do have one of those mini u-bolt locks too, that I lock around the front rotor to keep the wheel from turning.

And no, none of these are theft-proof, but they'll deter the casual thief, and they may slow down the professional one. I never leave my helmet or jacket on the bike. A career in law enforcement taught me that a thief will steal anything, even if he has no idea what it is, if he thinks he can sell it to someone else. And some people are like cats; they'll throw your helmet across a parking lot just to hear the sound it makes when it hits the ground.

I use a cable lock also, and it is long enough that I can also thread it through my jacket if needed.

For me, I am not crazy about having a lock like that hanging when I am riding. Flopping/banging around is a bad idea to me. I have a top box I keep on the bike, so that stuff goes into it while riding.

As far as I can tell, it neither flops nor bangs. There's really nothing there for it to bang into.

I definitely like the form/function of Bander's lock; but the way I ride....it would flop & bang. I do agree that there's not much for it to bang into, but it would annoy me hearing it. I like the versatility of the cable lock, but I agree with Tupperware, I don't leave my helmet on my bike due to the fear of jackwagons being jackwagons.
