Fuel Tank Filler Neck - Corrosion

When you lift the filler cap, the inside rim of my tank filler neck is showing some corrosion.

Never had this on a bike before. Want to sort this before it gets out of hand.

What would cause the corrosion? How best to remove and seal to prevent fresh surface rust?

TIA

Cause could be alcohol in the fuel which carries water with it in some cases. May simply be the wet climate and vent line allowing it into the filler neck area too. I don't think that area is anything except bare steel.

Wipe a nice layer of petroleum jelly on the corrosion and leave it for a day. Light scrub with a brush and wipe off. Nylon or brass bristle brush to start with. Stiffer if that doesn't do the trick. Brush/scrub with the jelly in place so the gunk mixes with it, which will help prevent it from falling in the tank. I'd stuff a paper towel or rag in the opening first too.

After that, perhaps just an occasional spray of WD40 or ACF50 in the neck area to prevent a repeat.

There's a drain for the area around the opening under the cap. make sure the drain hose isn't kinked (easy to do when lifting and lowering the tank) or blocked.

I'll check the drain tube. Clean filler neck and acf50 onto it.

Been looking for the filler cap seal to buy, but doesn't seem to be available. Whole filler cap assembly only. PITA

RH Scotland. Dont forget that filler cap rubber is probably the szme on other Yamaha bikes. Many bits arent listed for the S10 but are for the R1 or R6.
Worth doing some research on that maybe?

ksd, you're probably gonna be ok. The weather on the other side of the Atlantic is nothing like 95% of our weather. The state of Washington being on of the few exceptions. I remember a chapter in my high school history class. There was an English explorer that sent a message back to the Queen: "the weather here is not fit for man, nor beast." I always figured that was saying something, considering the weather he was used to.

When you read about electrical gremlins, it's usually a UK bike. My sympathies go out to y'all. :)

And there's me looking at your spokes thinking how ashamed i am of mine. I feel better now. Just out of interest what sort of cost are you looking at to get both wheels respoked. I guess you didnt do it yourself.

bike was 11 months old took pictures of wheels sent them to yamaha where i bought the bike about 230 miles away, they said they would rebuild them under warranty,
but they were going to rebuild with same spokes, i didn,t want the hazzle of wheels of posting rebuild sent back then the same again next year,
i knew HAGON SHOCKS had rebuilt a few tenere wheels with stainless, so i took the wheels and tyres off sent the wheels to them had them back a week later redone with stainless, that was 5 yrs ago and about 20000 miles. they are stunning now

cost then was £138 for 2 sets of stainless spokes and nipples, i think they charged about £ 45 -£60 a wheel to build plus the postage
