Runs rough on hot or long runs

Have noticed the engine gets lumpy like one cylinder is not running properly on hot days in traffic or after being on the road for a couple of hours??

Dealer checked, replaced spark plugs and balanced throttle bodies. Nothing was a miss???

Anyone had this and worked through it??? Thinking a coil pack is breaking down when hot..

In my experience, twins never feel quiet/smooth when riding in town, my TL1000, RSV, Caponord and now Super Tenere all lumpy in traffic. Never really noticed an issue on the open road though.

Is yours a Gen 1?

Yes it is a Gen1. It does run better on short runs and cool wether.

I gets noticeably rougher and sounds like it is on one cylinder..

My ‘12 had similar symptoms and the coils all had higher primary resistance when I checked. My problem was resolved with new coils.

Mines a gen 1, everything smoothed out and felt better once I upgraded the clutch basket to a 2014 gen 2 basket.

I have done the clutch basket, but as I said it doesn't always do it, only when hot or on long trips.

Like a heat soak issue and coils sound like intermittent heat issues.

Well I just pulled it apart and swapped coils for new genuine ones.

New coils checked and within Specifications.

Two Coils on the right side cylinder were low in OHS on the primary side and showed a slight sign of moisture (rust marks).

Hope it works properly now. :)

Certainly sounds like coil sticks.
If she is still rough, just check the rubber caps on the throttle bodies - they can harden & crack with age/heat & admit air randomly

Ride to the toy run wasn't real hot but radiator fan came on while talking to traffic control and no miss fire.

Feels like it has changed so will check on hotter days.

Well I rode it to work today to get the throttles balanced now that it runs on both cylinders.

Radiator fan came on in the rain and heat this morning - no problems.

Radiator came on many times in traffic getting home in the heat - No problems.

So I feel it has been fixed as others on here have found.

Hi TeneKym,
It’s 3 years on now but thought I’d check if the stick coils fixed your problem?
Mine is doing the same.

Well I have a further update.

I pulled the fuel pump out of the tank. First thing I found was a full moth??? After pulling the pump apart I found the screen filter clogged.

I sprayed it with Carb Cleaner and it changed colour and washed all the crud off. Then put it all back together after finally getting my hand out of the tank (cleaning inside).

Seems to have more top end power and heat doesn't worry it any more.

Checked old injectors with an injector cleaning kit and looked ok???

That sounds like something I found in the tank too.
