Regarding the seat concepts kit - difficulty on installation? I've never done upholstery work before.

For those considering an after market seat, my two cents is to go with Russell. Mine was one of the first Day Longs they did for a Tenere and I love it. I've got 80+K miles on this seat and it still feels great. Russell offers a money back guarantee, but you have to give them 2 chances to correct whatever isn't working for you. And you can get a backrest as well. The backrest slips into a channel built into the pillion seat. I got a backrest with my RDL but have only used it a handful of times so I cannot comment on how well it works. Perhaps a backrest would be helpful if trying to eliminate lower back pain?

The ST deifinitely has a different riding position from any bike I've ridden. I've found that the seat pushes my lower back and gut forward causing a sharp curve in my lower back and the pegs cause enough of a bend in my knees that I can't use them to support my 240lbs. This in turn causes me to support my upper body with my arms and shoulders causing fatigue in them as well as in my head and neck. It's an odd, uncomfortable riding position made worse by my 52 years, 30+ years of which I've spent in the saddle. I've got the tallest bar risers I could find and am going to try lowering the pegs a bit , as well as a possible seat mod. I don't think I can "fix" it all, but I am looking for the combination to minimize it. The info here really helps. Might need to start a thread for Big Guy Ergonomics.

Know what you mean, monkey butt and the S10 go together like a hand in a glove. Still use the stock seat with the seat mod and use an AirHawk seat cushion. For me that's okay.

Agreed. I have an Airhawk cushion built into the seats and I have finally succeeded in managing to keep them holding air. On top of that I have just added a sheepskin cover (ordered before I figured out the Airhawk issue) and now I'm awaiting suitable weather to try it all out.

Monkey butt...a right pain in the...

No problems for me. I moved the seat to the highest position and it's great. The problem is getting back on my (stock), '82 Suzuki GS1100EZ after riding the Tenere! It feels like my knees are up around my ears, the brakes suck, the suspension sucks! Oh, what this "new" (2013 ST), has done to me!

I experienced some of that when I moved from a FJR to the Super Ten. Some of it is your body getting used to a new riding position and developing new muscle strength for that new position. Advil and time. Some of it may also be ergonomics too. I did add risers to raise the bars, for other reasons as well as discomfort. It did help. FWIW, I'm 55 and got my first Super Ten in 2011. I put risers on the '15 when I got that too.
I also had lower back pain when I started riding this bike. I spent a lot of years and miles on an old FJ 1200 and then a FJR1300. both of those bikes felt like the people who built them made them just to fit me. I like the forward lean and lower bars when I am on the street. the biggest thing that helped me on those bikes both of them had some support for my upper legs that the Super T doesn't have. So maybe a seat change is a good idea for your bike. Just like was mentioned in this thread after developing some muscle for the upright riding position I seem to have no trouble with it.

Contemplating the S10, never had one.
I did have an 05 FJR and would be curious how go the two bikes bone stock compare comfort wise.

A lot of riders came from or still have a FJR, me included.
Simply IMO, it’s a bit lighter, taller and just as comfortable, more so because you’re more upright riding a big dirt bike. Just as roomy if not more than the FJR.
Low in torque is awesome but it won’t yank your arms out of the socket like the FJR did. Interstate speeds around 80 are comfortable and 6th gear is an OD.

The ST takes me back to my old XL250 days at 16, you’ll like it.
